Running a Wider Wheel Track - Opinions Needed
I have been considering running spacers on all 4 corners just to push the wheels out as far as I can without cracking a fender. They are already slightly outside of the wheel wells, but I was thinking a 1/8" or 1/4" max may be okay.
Would it be advisable to run the widest wheel track possible?? Why or why not?
Is there added handling to be had with doing that? or just unnecessary drag?
thx

Little more track will help. Just watch your fenders. It will also change your spring rates as it has more leverage which I learned from D Popp

Possible added stress to wheel bearings plus fender rub issues. Even at a 1/4" I would think it would be a negligible difference in handling. That's my opinion though i can't share any experience.

Also, without changing your wheel studs to longer (and stronger) ones, you won't be able to use more than 1/8" spacers without running dangerously low on threads.

I have been running 8mm spacers (roughly 3/8") on the back of my '90 for two years with no issues. Front wheel bearings actually wore out before the backs did. I have longer ARP studs and I could easily put a 1" spacer on before having to worry about thread engagement.

I would be willing to change to longer studs if the handling improvement was worth it.
I know that on the surface a 1/2" (1/4" x 2) wider track doesn't seem like much, but I have been very surprised in the past with the effects (negative and positive) of changes that I questioned the validity of and felt were going to be negligible.
Odds are that I will try it regardless, and I know that many people run spacers for various reasons, but just wanted to know if anyone has seen improved handling from it...

I switched from street tires to race tires when I added my spacers so I cant say if it made me go any faster or not.

After a "set" wheel track has been setup in the car. You can use spacers to correct or uncorrect a handling issue. We like a pretty wide gap between front and rear track width. About a inch wider up front seems to work well.

How are you measuring that Randy? To the outside of the wheel, or to the centerline of the wheels? if the outside, then really, you have quite a bit more than a 1" difference in track widths.

I thought track widths were measured from mounting surface to mounting surface of the wheels? i could be wrong though..
