Default Nittos to Hoosiers

Hey guys,
I run some HPDE events down here in hot S/E Texas and I have a question for you. I've been using the Nitto 555R2 tires and have been very satisfied with them for the most part. Well, they're shot and I need some new rubber. I'm thinking about going to the Hoosier R6 full race tires. Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bill

Well the R6 is a DOT tire that likes lots of negative camber. A new set in stock C6 sizes is $1500 verses going with take offs from the various 18" suppliers. I ran the 555R2 and loved the tire life but the R6 allows you to go further with confidence. You'll never be able to go back to a treaded tire.

I ran on the RII's last season and was very happy with them, they were really sticky and they wear pretty good. I have the R6's now and they are a tad stickier but wear quicker. the RII's on a hot track do a REALLY good job so might be worth to run again since you'll get longer use out of them.

The R6's arent considered full race tires, Last week I ran with Dunlop Slicks bought form LG and man... those tires STICK !!

The R2 is probably one of the best tires in terms of price/wear/grip. To go a lot faster cost a bunch more and the wear goes down way quick. Weight of the tire is close to the F1 SC (which are pretty light).

At CMP back in May I did a back to back on my R2's (fri) and sticker A6's (sat). The Hoosiers were 3-4 sec/lap quicker.

You can get by with less camber with the R2. It's a great tire for a street car that gets on the track a few times a year.

They are good street tires to, although they will blast your rockers as they are stickier.

Im running Nitto NT-01's now. They are a little stickier than the 555RII's but have very similar life. They would be worthless in the rain even at full tread. I have 9 track days on my so far + mileage to and from events. Looks like they will go for another 1 or 2 days before their toast.

Water! Back in the pre-trailer days I drove to an event with new Supercars on. It was raining a little (think Katrina). It was dark out and any standing water would get the car waterbourne.

The next day, at Watkins, was a real eye opener. Had a very concerned chief instructor in the car as we went out in monsoon conditions. After he was comfortable that I was not a complete moron, we started getting pretty fast, even through there were rivers coming down the esses, across 5, and into the boot. The big difference from driving on the road vs. the track is you know where the standing/flowing water is and you can see it. I love driving a soaked track now.

I could not imagine slicks on a wet road, at night, with out images of a wrecked Z in a ditch.

no but public roads have too much road clag for thin tires. Plus Hoosiers are measured in heat cycles, not miles.

I run Nitto NT-01s on my Mustang and have PAXed first when running autocrosses in the rain. With full tread they're actually pretty nimble in the wet.
