Default Autocross with an A4?

So what is best with an A4? Leave it in 3rd? Just leave it in drive? I know probably a simple question.

Depends on what type of track / autocross layout, and rear end gear ratio on your car.

Typical autocross I would shift manually between 1st and 2nd as needed. 3rd would rarely be needed in a normal autocross

Some smaller, tight, tracks layouts you can run the whole thing in 1st gear depending on how tall your rear gears are.

OK, so this is a road course not an autocross?
When I had my 88 Auto on an autocross I kept it in 2, 2 is good for up to 90MPH in the 88.
Should be close for your car as well even with the 4:10's

Road course is a different animal, depending on the turns and how much you brake determines your gear selection. I have my students keep it in 3 (D, not OD) for a few laps to see where the car tries to kick down. Next time under braking I have them slip it into 2 and back to 3 after track out.

Thanks for the reply. I'm really new to this whole thing but like the idea of driving on a track. I went on the Waterford Hills track with an instructor in my car that is a similar style as Grattan. What fun! I want to be more involved with doing that with my car.

Question: What type of track is this. Not auto cross? Would I say I am just driving a track? Or on a _______ track? I know it is probably the most basic question.

Correct, NOT an autocross. Autocrosses are set up on large (typically flat) paved/concrete surfaces with cones to designate the course and the course changes from event to event.

Yes. And most people who aren't involved with the sport will assume that you're "racing" when you say that, which isn't true either but explaining the difference is
