is this the way to boost up decreasing numbers?

It seams the TC class has good numbers. Or maybe it just SCCAs way of getting the VW sponsorship into TC with a TC2 car

IMO the GT cars have gotten so outrageously expensive that only a few can play.

I guess I'm just a believer in the less is more type of racing.

I'm thinkin' the participation and competition would be much better if the cars were something along the lines of:

a stock, gutted body C5, C6 with minimal HP improvements...Headers, computer tuning, maybe mild cam, in other words about 425 rwhp.

coilovers OK
brake upgrades with limits
stock Z06 gear box
wing and splitter ok
lexan windshield and hatch glass
maybe a gear rule

No CF bodywork

I guess kinda of a minimal NASA ST

These would still be very quick cars, just look at the lap times of the best T1 cars. They are Probably some 300# heavier.

The Vipers could be adjusted to get a similar power to weight and the regular cup porsches would be close.

this will fail........we had 3 classes in the early/mid 90's, and it just dilutes the field.

Cost could be controlled by reducing allowances, getting things back like they were 10 years ago (no carbon, no sequential shifters, etc). Unfortunately, there are always some extremely well funded teams that force the series to allow expensive, competitively unnecessary upgrades that forces the little guys out.

In 2002 I ran a Corvette with stock body (plus splitter/wing), stock trans, and the racing was just as good, if not better, than the following years. Within 2 years, the cars were all carbon (extra $30k), sequentially shifted (extra $30k), drop spindled (extra $6k). The Point of entry of the series doubled almost overnight, and the racing is no better.

To me, when the Caddys entered the series, that's when things went down hill.

I think it is a great idea to open up the series to other cars and get the numbers up. The problem which developed is that GT became absurdly expensive and all but elimnated any privateer. The factories for a short period filled the grid but when they started leaving the grid started to get thin. I think the problem in the first instance was permittting the series to become absurdly expensive.

I would like to see them open up GT with other classes similar to a GT4 car in Europe. No wings, limited choices in engines (LS6, LS2 or LS3 with the appropriate pumps etc..) , bigger brake package and coil overs. Period. You woud see a bunch of us modify out T1 cars and jump right in.

I have spoken to a number of racers in T1 and they would definitely do a bunch of the races if the above happened. And why not? The racing would be more exciting with the additional cars and the series would get back to its original roots.

I hope they do it this year so we can get out there and join them at the Glen!
