Default Cadillac LS6 vs Corvette LS6...for a T-1 C5Z..UPDATE!!

Well, my 3 weekend, 4 lap old Katech built T-1 spec'd LS6 went belly up this last Saturday at Buttonwillow. Obviously in order to get more seat time in a new to me car I need a new engine. Jeff Kopp said he's pretty sure the Cadillac LS6 (~$3200) is the same exact engine as the Corvette LS6 (~$4400), minus the oil pan, which all you have to do is swap pans. Once the pans are swapped, you're back to a stock Corvette LS6.

Can anyone verify this? I don't want to buy the cheaper engine to find out it has a smaller cam in it or that the engine is not legal in some way or another.

TIA

Chris

Danny Popp (raftracer) will know this for sure, get a hold of him. WTF happened to the other engine in 4 laps?

Alright, thank you

no clue. i was at work when i heard what the carnage was so i didnt have time to ask what the diagnostic fully said besides #8 cylinder has no compression, bent push rod, spark plug seized in the head, coolant in oil/oil in coolant/head/manifold. i have a hunch, but will keep it to myself until i talk to the shop tomorrow

Also, it was a new track to me so i was only at maybe 6-7/10ths and shifting at/below 6500...Oli can vouch for me..well, my slowness anyways as he wasn't in the car, i didn't get data and don't have video (how convenient for me )

I picked up a crate LS6 for my '01 Z06 last summer (part#17801268) and it required a swap of the oil pan, headers, and clutch. Not sure why it came with the clutch and headers, but I guess it makes a good deal for a Cadillac replacement. I've cursed that Caddy clutch several times now, each time I trip over it in the garage, the thing is a frickin' anvil!

Other than that, the motor came with all the coils, plugs, wires, throttle body, etc already on it, so it was really simple to drop in (aside from the joys of pulling and replacing a C5 motor...).

so all the internals are the same? power output between caddy LS6/Corvette LS6 is also the same?

Hmm. The cheapest price that I found for the caddy LS6 is $5,167.00

Where did you see it for $3200?

Also - check out this article with a quote from Dave Muscaro regarding the differences:

Chris the CTS-V motor is an '04 spec Z06 motor (i.e. no PVC, etc)... you'll have to change the oil pan and harmonic balancer...

Please PM member '2002rich' (silver C5Z06 running with you in unlimited class at the BW event)... he's transplanted that motor into one of his cars and knows *exactly* what the differences are.

pretty sure.

after looking through some info though, looks like they aren't really the same. subtle differences but enough that SCCA could say it's not legal...especially if they're getting down to drivers socks..

just found out a guy on another forum bought a Corvette LS6 for 3800 from Classic Chev in Grapevine, TX..

SOLD - the LS6 is sold, thanks.

I will probably be selling my LS6 that we just pulled out of the Mosler (we put in the LS7). I believe it was purchased by Mosler from GM sometime in 2006 or 2007 (meaning it is the current GM crate motor). It has 1500 miles on it. It is at Katech right now waiting to be crated up for shipping. It is a complete long block - probably missing a few small items (sensors etc.). I will GIVE it away for $2K (the crating/shipping fees will be the responsibility of the purchaser). If you want to know exactly what pieces are missing please contact Jason. For anyone needing a T1 motor, or a spare this is a pretty good deal.

Pretty good deal? It is a give away for that kind of dollars. Everett, Give me a call if you get a chance, (re:brake update).

I agree Gary - for 2K I would almost rather simply keep it, but garage/storage space is at a premium for me!

Just so folks know, the engine will need a flywheel and clutch, because you Corvette guys can't reuse the custom flywheel and Porsche clutch that was on the motor, and I am guessing that Katech took off the water pump but I am not positive about that. It also won't have the alternator because we used that with my new motor. The oil pan that is on the LS6 is part number 12558762 which I think is the F-body oil pan. Anyone wanting to put this in place of a blown T1 motor should have everything needed to swap this one into place.

Almost forgot - for use in a Vette, the intake manifold will need to be unbolted and turned around 180 degrees (in the Mosler the intake is reversed).

blown head gasket (or a cracked head, but with the coolant/oil mixture probably head gasket), hydro-locked the #8 cylinder, bent the connecting rod (hence the loud knock i heard). Only questionable item is how/why/what caused my #8 plug to have 0 gap and seize it in the head. Something must have hit it closed inside..

this is whats been found without tearing the engine down.

ordered a new LS6 long block from Kopp yesterday

Still, that's one hell of a deal on an LS6 considering an average Gen 1 small block costs just as much.
