Default Finally Saw a GTR Run

We all realize there are fast cars besides the Corvette (I know…right ). Running at PIR a couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to watch a new GTR run. Unlike a couple guys in their Ferrari’s who were creeping around the course not risking anything, the guy driving the GTR put his head down and really got after it. It appeared stock with the possible exception of tires. I didn’t have any preconceived expectations...I had never seen a GTR in action before. I was fairly impressed...the GTR was fast. I don’t think the GTR is going to upset the ‘natural order of things’ with the faster Corvette Racers but no one should underestimate a GTR either.

There were some that ran Road America this year and I think my C4 could run a similar time now.

1000 pounds too much weight for a track car, how many laps can it do without heating up the brakes and tires to the point they do not work. I went form a lotus elise to a c6 6speed, and all I can say is weight is the enemy. In hurts, turning, braking and acceleration, the car is a tech dream but not a track dream. It does what the market wants a fast boulevard cruise.

It doesn't help that that particular GTR was on winter tires. They would have over heated very quickly. Aside from that, the GTR really shows it's weight in turns, especially the carousel. I exited the carousel easily 20 MPH faster in a C4, a C5 Z06, and even faster in a C6 Z06.
When I was at RA in our '90, I was seeing about 130 max on the main straights. In the prepared '96 I was seeing about 145 to 150, in the C5 Z06 I was around 145-150, in the C6 Z06 I saw 163-168 on the main straight. They would all corner better than the GTR on winter tires, however. The GTR did look awesome in the straights with great acceleration and good speed at the end.

Edit: I came off a bit brash, I would absolutely love the chance to whomp on a GTR with a measly old C4, I think it'd be fun and I think yours and my C4 would be able to keep up with the one in the video. A well driven GTR on good tires, however, would be a completely different story.

Good Video Andy. Yes I agree you should be able to do similar times.

He was running quite well, but not pushing the GT-R

That vid didn't show a complete lap but according to my watch and an interpolation on the remainder of the straight, I figured I can beat that guy in my bone stock C5 coupe on street tires. I'm sure that car can do better than that. At least according to the reviews it should.

i've watched a couple run now too....they make average drivers look like great drivers to the average viewer, and are easy to make turn decent---respectable times for a non-racecar. 1 in particular i saw, absolutely terrible line, but the AWD and power saved his **** line to turn a respectable time. sure helps having multiple driver aids :o

cool cars though

The GTR is a pretty good value but for some reason I have yet to see one on a road course. Not sure if it's due to the cost of consumables or if the car attracts a different type of buyer. Seems like for road course use the weapons of choice are still Vettes, Porsches, Vipers and Lotuses.

I have seen 2 on course NJMP and WGI. from what I saw it is a heavy car which doesnt help it, but hell the guys drove their on street tires, had fun and went home....

I too saw one guy practicing drifting and the car just sucked down and held. AWD must be nice...

It is indeed a very fast car but the one I was in at NHMS weighed 3940 on the NASCAR scales there. It is like taking a Boeing 747 to the Reno air races. I drove a new Caddy CTS-V recently on the street and even with 550 HP it felt huge and heavy as well (because it is!).

Under estimate the GT-R at your own peril.

The car with just a few mods can be extremely fast.

Still, let's wait and see how the GT-R holds up...

with extensive track use.

I like the GTR. Anything that goes fast, can be used on a road course and is not a pedestrian-car-appliance gets the nod in my book. I think the hype was a little exaggerated.. but in the end it will be good for motorsport in general! We can't have enough hot, fast cars...

.. BTW: the interior IMHO is awfully UGLY.,.. but teh rest of the car is

While I have no desire to ever own a GT-R, my wife and I like the looks and performance it offers as a sport touring car. I hope to see a couple GT-Rs at VIR in my run groups this year and see how they actually perform with a good driver behind the wheel.

Had two in my run group at Road Atlanta in Dec. One siver with black stripes had a driver that either was unfamiliar with RA, or just didn't have the confidence. One silver without stripes ran strong. Competent driver and based on his line, was familiar with the track. Had a hard time catching him, but ultimately did. He got sloppy as session went on, and I am assuming his tires/brakes were starting to get hot. Like someone said before, watch out for these with good drivers. Jerry

Of the times I've seen a GT-R at the track at Willow Springs or Roval, the driver always seems to run about the median time of all the c6 z06's present, half faster than the GT-R, half slower.
