Default Toyo R888s in the Rain

Anyone driven on the highway/street for any significant amount of time on R888s in the rain?

I'm wondering just HOW bad they are?

Thanks.

Tread depth will make a huge difference. My rears are down to the wear bars, fronts are a bit above. We had some good rain a little while ago and there was a significant difference between front and rear traction. They are much much worse than RA-1s were in the rain (comparing with a different car). But I think they're tolerable if they've got some significant tread depth.

Nice timely thread...I have two sets of wheels, one for dry track, and one for street/wet track. I was considering going to R888 for the street/wet track tires, but wonder how they do in the wet on track.

Since it is somewhat in line with OP's question, if the R888 is not a decent compromise, any suggestions?

Not many options for 19" wheels than the R888 or street tires.

18" has Hoosier rains, R888, and full tread Toyo RA1 (if you can find them.)

The Hoosiers are probably the best, with full tread Toyo RA1 good and then R888 also decent.

There are probably some racing Michelins that are good, but I don't have any experience with type or availablilty.

Yes, a friend of mine uses them as a rain tire for autocross (and street tire). I don't know about standing water street situations, but very effective for autocross competition.

As an aside, if you can use 18s all around, the Nitto NT-01 is also very good in the wet. I use a set on my Mustang.

I drove home from Thunderhill once (90 miles) in the rain with mine and didn't have any problems.

Rob:

We just picked up a set of R888 from Frisby Tire (www.FrisbyRaceTire.com) to use a rain tires and back ups if we lose a slick. Ran them in the rain one day at Putnam Park and they worked just fine.

I ran them in many wet autocrosses, in the wet at Summit Point a few weeks ago, and in the wet for a couple hundred miles driving home from Summit Point.

They do very well in all those situations given how little tread they have. Even when they are close to the wear bars.

I used mine in the rain for the first time this past weekend, as long as it's just wet they seem to work all right, as far as standing water, they seem to hydro plane fairly easily as one might expect with the limited amout of tread that they have!!!

If its just wet non tread tires are probably as good or better. All the tread does is evacuate water from under the tire. It can't do that if there isn't enough water. On a wet track the tread actually reduces the amount of grip by reducing the surface area in contact with the ground. That is why the pros run dry tires in the wet.

I actually had to drive back home on the interstate with them in some good rain. My R888s are basically brand new, but they worked very well at interstate(ish) speeds in some decent amounts of rain.
