I wasn't able to find one used a couple of weeks ago.
New rechargeable was $430 with shipping from hoerr (sp) racing through amazon.
I think the wired was $390 shipped.
I just went ahead and bought it, it showed up in just a few days.

A bit cheaper plus free ground shipping.

Or see if DiscoveryParts is cheaper with the "Sparkle Pony" discount.

Unless you have two cars with you at the track, I'd just get the wired model for reliability and use an "add-a-circuit" connector to get it powered and you can, literally, take it off and mount it on another car in about 5 minutes. For a super-quick install this weekend I attached it in the front passenger wheel well on the front inside of it just under the brake duct, using one of the existing trim bolts as well as regular screws just holding it to the plastic trim. I'll likely search for a better spot for it, but you want it up front of course, because it would suck to lose by the length of your car because you mounted it in the back!
Pick a switched fuse in the under-hood fuse block, so that the transponder is off when the car is off, and find a grounding bolt and you are good to go. I picked one of the O2 sensor fuses because a) it still allowed me to put the cover back on the fuse box, and b) I don't have the O2 sensors there any more anyway because the race series has a no cats policy. Realistically though, just about any will do, the AMB draws so little power that you can put the add-a-circuit in just about any of them. The little green light should be off when the key is off, and on when the ignition is on. The only trick was finding a good ground bolt to attach to within reach of the ground line, darned plastic car has very few close to the fuse box on my C5 Z06!

I'm using the TranX260 direct wired model. Actually, I'm using a friend's 260, hence the wiring tutorial I left above; I'm holding out for the used one that Jason said is likely to come up for sale after varkwso buys his!

With the popularity of GPS devices, you can find the XT or Longare Hot Lap Timers on e-bay for 1/3rd the retail price. I won a bid for a perfect shape XT for $99.00 I think they are $250ish new?
Can't see spending any money on new when there are SO many of these used on e-bay. Take advantage of most racers going GPS and buy their used stuff.

AMB transponders are used for official timing by clubs and tracks have the loop in place.
for personal timing that is different.
any SCCA or NASA races or NASA TT, the AMB is a must have

Okay, I gotta laugh at that one, especially when some races require lights on when there's rain, and that's the first time you notice it! Ouch!
Edit: I laugh only because that sounds like something I would have done!

I did have two - then the owner of both started racing again so I had to return one - soon his son will start racing again and will want the second one back
I hope to have two cars at the track when I can and want to get two of my very own - swapping takes time better spent resting up for us old guys.
