Hello all,
I have a 03 Z06 I'll be taking to Brainered Raceway Road Course on June 1st. My first time!
My OE pads are worn out, what should I replace them with? I'm for sure a novice and will want to leave them on once I get them on and low dust is a dream of mine....
Any suggestions?

The stock C5Z pad is a great pad for HPDE newbies. I would highly recommend picking up another set and use them for at least your first several events. I'm guessing you're on street tires - right? If so, then you don't want to use anything any more aggressive than this pad anyway. You can usually find a nice buy on a take off set in the C5 parts section.

Any feed back available on Hawk Hp? Supposedly out perform OE Z06 pads but with less dust and noise? Good alternative?

If you want to go with stock take-offs, I have a full set with at least 75% of the original thickness left. If you are interested, PM me and will work something out. I would advise carrying a spare set, just in case. The C5 pads are super easy to install, if you do not have the tools or knowledge, somebody at the track will be help you out...or you need to find a friendlier group to run with.

If you do not want to go stock, then consider Carbotech. They are wonderful pads. For the newbie I would go with XP10 compound up front and XP8 in the rears. These pads are 100% streetable and the dust is the easiest to wash off of any pad I know.

I burned up Z06 pads in one event, but since this is your first event you'll probably be OK. I'd recommend a Carbotech XP8 or something similar.



Don't forget to swap them around so they don't taper so much too.

No track-worthy pad is low dust ... so consider the corrosiveness of the dust ...
IMHO the Carbotech is friendler than the Hawk in this regard.

This is how I would rate the pads suggested in the above replies.

Hawk HPS, Clean but not that great of a stopper
Stock Z, Good pad for the street, not too much dust or sound
PFC Z rated, Takes the heat pretty well, a bit dusty after hard runs
HP+ Great pad, takes heat better then above, and dust like a sawmill and are pretty noisy

We really like the PFC Z for the novice or the average guy or gal looking for some fun at the track. (have them instock)

Fluid is more important then which pad for your first run. Brembo, Motul or like will work very well.

FYI, We are in Buffalo, MN. We are into the roadracing, Doug has a ton of time around BIR. In fact we maybe going up there on June 1st also.

The XP8's sound like a freight train when stopping the last 10 feet or so. I was too lazy to switch them out and got stuck in L.A. traffic yesterday.

They do work well at the track though

You may have an issue with bedding or incompatibility with whatever you were running before. I run XP12 up front and XP10 in the rears, on the street as well. I get no noticeable noise out of them unless I have the window down...in that case, the fronts do squeak a bit as you might expect from a cold track pad.

One word...STOCK

Until you can safely drive your car at the limits of your stock pads, they are the best bet. ZO6 pads are fine.

another vote for stock pad considering your situation. make sure you get the correct part numbers, some dealers try to sell you ceramic pad as OEM replacement

I agree with the stock pads (Z06). So far, they are the only pads I have used. I think the most important thing is to use a high temp brake fluid.

Include me on this list too. I have done BIR a number of times with stock Z06 pads and just recently moved up to Carbotechs. Stock Z06 pads will work just fine. Just make sure your flush your fluid and replace it with a good DOT4 or DOT 5.1 (not DOT 5).
