Top Ten Rookie Mistakes -- Which ones apply to you?

I'm really surprised how many times in the professional ranks rule 1 is broken. Especially when the car is "almost" stopped, many take their foot off the brake. Those coming up behind are often only barely able to avoid the spun car. Sometimes the extra foot or two really matters. And the damage is EXPENSIVE.

# 1 has occurred a few times in front of me and I was thankful they remembered what to do.

#1.5: Keep you eyes up/look ahead. You don't want to hit the stationary car that has successfully completed #1.
I got around him no problem in #133 but I should have seen him sooner...
I think I have seen mistake #2 more than all the others added together.

I started to run out of Gas at a Race at Thill, came of the track, WENT TO THE PUMP!, Got out and pumped myself paid w credit card, went back on track and finished the race.
And drove back into second place overall.
They didn't even DQ me for it, although I wasn't racing in class and took no points.
Thinks the marshalls just missed it

6 - Slid 4 off on corner exit on the first lap at Cal Speed, giving back the lead I had just taken about 5 turns earlier. :o Right, Oli?

#9 I experienced just before the 2006 Run Offs. The "5 minute" whistle had already been blown and I had to go. I could see the the other drivers laughing even with their fullface helmets.

yelling at the workers--reminds me of the "I WAS SEVEEEEENTH!!!!" vid.
my first contact was a result of racing during qualifying.:o ran out of gas during a sprint too once.:o

Don't really understand what's wrong with going down the middle. What if I want to sacrifice the next corner to ensure a car doesn't get a chance to take that apex?
I think I used that at WSIR to make a pass stick on a much more powerful car that I could turn faster laps than.

#10 thank God no one lost a wheel this weekend. But I have seen it on the highway and track.
#9 I watched a car come into the pits during the endro, the other driver was in the porta crapper. Lost lap. This is a safety thing too. Incase of the worst case situation you need to be worked on by the doctors. It makes the outcome more favorable because you aren't filled with **** and crap.
#8 This crazy iceracing from the hay days of ice racing came out. Ran the car on low gas and was having starvation issues on lap two of a two hour endro.
#7 A great friend grabbed me by the the back of my shirt heading down pit lane. I was a little hot and ready to throw down. I slipped on the ice and fell over, he said "give it 10 minutes and if you still want to kick his azz, go right ahead". 10 minutes past and I didn't have the same feelings. I had a slower (fast car) slam the door on me every corner in the infield. With the Blue and Yellow flag being pointed at him, waved and damn near thrown at him. For about 7 laps he would walk me down the straight and in the infield I was all over him. He would leave the door wide open, and come right down on me. I had both feet in about 4-6 times a lap trying not to hit him. Then we made contact and I was pissed off like crazy. I was running a friend's car and we had a great weekend up to that point. No need to crash into a lapped car.
#6 Over driving going on everywhere. I maybe a part of this also, so I can't talk that bad about overdriving. But I will tell you this, tracks change all the time. Be carefull on the out lap. Broken ribs on the 1st lap during practice was all me, good thing I was in a Kart not a 50k vette during learning this.
#5 We get a half hour of qualifying. We didn't get a clean lap to save our lives. So we put it 11th on the grid I don't understand why people think this is racing time. I got by a slower car on the inside of a tight turn, which is bad enough. But no, I have to run a crap line to keep him from coming down on the inside.
#4 I have never heard of a brake pedal coming back or a nasty vibration go away with the same type of driving. There is a level of racing that it doesn't matter go for the gold anyways. I'm sure not at that level and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
#3 This was my biggest problems this weekend, from experienced drivers. If someone is lapping you, all it takes is a 2 second lift for them to be around you. Then don't race them, learn from them, it will be one of your faster laps anyways because you will be following. I was driving a friends car with no horsepower, but fast as hell in the tight stuff very hard to get around people. We made it very easy to pass us, because of a 1-2 second off the gas.
#2 Don't come back on the track hell bent to make up time. You screwed up and should be nice and safe getting back on the track. Damn near killed someone at the end of the straight. Good thing I was looking ahead.
#1 With 12 laps to go, in turn 2 at the end of the straight, there was a car off in the snow bank. With a yellow flag waving. I got off the gas and things didn't go so well after that. The tranny mount broke off, the engine-tranny dropped. Locked up a cv joint and I was heading to where the towing truck operator was clearing the car. I looked away from him and found a spot to crash into. Of course both feet where in. I have done it the other way, it didn't work out so good.
My point is, I had fun and hope people read these experiences and learn the easy way. Pobst is a first class act and I always read his column and hope to learn more in the future (the easy way)
