I currently run the Nitto 555 R2s for the HPDEs that I participate in .

Is there a better tire? I can use the Nittos for both Dry and Wet Track days. What else is out there???

I've run the Hoosier R6 on my CTS-V and thought it was great. Contact Eric Frisby at Frisby Tire (www.FrisbyRaceTire.com) for assistance with the Hoosiers. They also carry Hankook and Toyo tires.

The best tires for HPDE are someone else's castoffs. Run'em until they cord.

I started with the Nitto 555s and I've now switched to the Toyo 888s (275s front and 305s in the rear).
It's not a major difference but the 888s do seem to do a slightly better job on dry tracks. Neither tire is all that great in the wet.

What do you want from your tires? Do you drive to/from the events on them? How long do you expect them to last? If you're used to 555RIIs and you liked them, why not stick with them? The R888 is the RA-1 replacement and the 555RIIs are basically re-labelled RA-1s with a different tread pattern, so maybe the new R888s come in sizes you like and they're a bit newer technology...

I ran Kumho MX's when I ran street tires. Since them Toyo RA1 and now R888 scrubs on 18" wheels.

The MXs were a good tire at a good price. I seem to remember them working well in the rain.

Enjoyed VRL scrubs for a couple years but my sources are gone. Certainly not a rain tire.

I have always driven my car to the track. So a tire that doubles as a street tires is beneficial. I have been using the R2s for the past 2 seasons and am happy with them. Was just curious if there was something better and reasonably priced to replace them with. I am not against using them again as I have found they "stick" pretty well.

Driving to/from the track on them eliminates a bunch of choices... so you're looking at 555RII, RA-1, R888, NT-01 and then you get in to the sticky but not DOT-R tires... am I forgetting any? They're all a reasonable dual purpose tire. I've personally had good luck with the RA-1s, and I've got R888s on the C6 right now...

I went with RA-1's on recommendation of John from CCW, specifically because I have to drive to/from DE's (for now) and didn't want to worry about getting caught in heavy rain. Their more traditional tread pattern should make them less treacherous in the rain then some of the newer models. Otherwise - like Mr. McCready said, the compound & general construction is still the same across the Nitto's & Toyo's.

They can't compete with Hoosiers for outright speed. But I feel these 'semi-R compound' tires are certainly faster & better on-track then street tires, though they should last just as long because the tread won't chunk like full-tread streets can, and because they were designed from the outset with track use in mind.
