Default need pix of how big wings are mounted to C5īs

I have a hard time finding pictures of how the race C5īs have their big wings mounted to the body.
Sure I cannot just bolt on the wing to the C5 body, so whatīs done underneath it to have a stable, save mounted wing?

Sure I can figure it out myself, but it would be easier to do it after looking at pictures of someone, who has allready sucessfully done it...

Pictures are greatly appreciated.

I've seen guys bolt to the body & swear it works. I've also heard of deck lids caving in. Mine is pretty simple. .25in X 6in alum plate down through the floor bolted to steel boxes welded to the outside of the frame. I'm building a new shop & have my car stored or I would send a pic.

Dont know about the C5 but on my C6 Z06 the mechanic mounted the plates for my C6R wing on the back and drilled through then bolted in down

I"ve seen 140 mph on the track and the wing is still there

You have mounted it on the hatch, right?
Not on the rear bumper.

If I remember right, the C6īs have the wings all mounted on the hatch.
That may hold ok.

But the C5īs that Iīve seen all had it mounted where the rear bumper is....and therīs nothing underneath that could hold a wing....just the thin bumper.

Thanks for the info.

Is that red C5 in your avatar your vette?
If yes, email me some pix of it, please ....looks damn good!

If you find some pix of how you mounted your wing, that would he appreciated, also.

I think herb Pop (Danny Pops Father) was selling a bolt on wing type of kit for the C5s. Looked like it attached between the hatch and the rear bumper.

It depends on if you want to still operate your trunk the same way.
once you cut through rear cover and weld to bumper you loose the ability to open your trunk with the hinges. unless you mount the wing more aft but then you loose its purpose.
I'd mount it to the deck lid if you drive on the street. If its a track only car then mount to bumper and mount deck lid with pins.

I do believe part of the reason for mounting the wing over the bumper is the increase the leverage of the available downforce. If you look at Aaron Pfadts race car, his wing is way out and leans pretty far back, so I would not worry about the wing becoming less effective the further back you moun tit, I would be concerned that the front splitter/ undertray was appropriatly balanced fo rthe extra rear downforce a rear biased wing would provide.

Cut the tub in the rear pockets.

Bolt through the frame rails.

Two piece upright. so you can remove the wing easily and open the deck lid.

Giant wing.

PROFIT!

I like to weld steel angle-iron to the frame rails, then run verticle plates of 3/8" or so aluminum straight up to make wing mounts. I bolt the aluminum plates to the steel angle. I then run at least one diagonal.

The body is rigid, so bolting the the bodywork is fine UNTIL you hit something. Then it will rip the bodywork right off of the car. Running aluminum plates down through the body makes a long lever-arm, so they will bend if you hit something, but they won't come off.

***just like ryan0, except that I weld the angle to the frame, then bolt the aluminum to the angle. Just makes assembly a little easier for me.

Here is the APR wing and it is mounted through the decklid, there are 2 guys ussing this set-up at Road America and the cars hit between 145 and 150, so far so good.

Here is the ACP wing that is mounted to the rear frame rail, once the aluminum is mounted, I drilled 4 holes through the bumper cover and installed it. That way you can remove the wing easily if needed.

My wing mounts to the deck lid with brackets supplied by ACP (Kerry Hitt). I've had no issues with the deck lid at all. Another friend of mine who has lot's of racing mileage also had the same mount and never had issues with it. The wing is the 72" version so maximum width has been tested at 150 MPH speeds. Turn 4 at summit pt will never be the same without it!

Here is the APR mount they supplied my wing with.

They explaiend to me they moved the mounts out the edge as they found the double layered outer edge of the trunk lid to be the strongest - but it may also be appropriate place for mounting on the Coupe hatch.

My only concern with mounting to the trunk lid, would the lift generated by the wing during a spin - so I plan on installing trunk pins.

That looks nice and should fit my coupe hatch.

But isnīt that wig sitting pretty low?

All of the race cars Iīve seen, yet (Pfadt, ....), have the wings sitting way higher???

I think the camera lense changed the depth of field in that image. The wing is pretty much roof height. From deck lid top of wing s 11". Aaron's is a little higher yet, and canted backwards as well I believe for maximm leverage and down force.

Ah, I see !

Thanks!!

Two last things:

Any hint where I could get that wing at the best price??
APR directly, or anywhere else?

And....where can I get that front splitter?
I think I have that one seen on the Pfadt car, too??

Thanks and:

Happy new year !!

Most race series say top of the roof line, and rear of the car.

Nasa's rule is no higher than 8" above the roofline.

Wally.. get it as far back as you can to get it.. My wing sits about 8"-10" back farther than anything going thru the trunk lid.
