Tata to sponsor Ferrari
Strange days ...
Tata to sponsor Ferrari
Autocar (2008.12.18)
Tata, the Indian firm that owns Jaguar and Land Rover, has agreed to
sponsor the Ferrari F1 team from next season.
"For the first time an Indian brand will appear on a Ferrari," said Ferrari
chief Luca di Montezemolo.
There’s no official word on how much money the Indian conglomerate
will invest in Ferrari.
Ratan Tata sits on the Fiat board, which is where the Ferrari deal has
stemmed from. Tata and Fiat already have a joint venture to produce
small, cheap cars in India.
The news comes as Tata-owned Jaguar and Land Rover continues to
lobby the UK government for a £1bn tax-payer bailout.

Well, TATA is a huge comglomorate, with holdings ranging from motels/hotels to IT services to energy generation to consumers goods (Tetley tea) to materials (their steel producing group is one of the largest in the world), as well as automotive (besides making cars they also are a large supplier). Their annual sales are north of $60B. So, it would be like a GE or the like signing on as a sponsor.

Agreed, TATA has deep pockets.

You may laugh, but a few years ago...
Tata sports car may be made abroad
Tata Engineering is considering manufacturing the Tata Aria coupe
— a sports car based on the Indica platform — at a production faciliy
outside India.
"The sales volumes of a low-cost sports car like the Aria might be
higher in the overseas market than the demand in the domestic market.
We are considering the option of producing the Aria at a plant outside
India," Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata said.

And I don't mean to insinuate that they can't actually do it, it just seems so out of character with everything else they make. Their trucks (big trucks) are pretty awesome and considering the environment they are in and the propensity for low maintenance, they must be built with serious endurance in mind from the drawing board.
Tata is indeed huge and has made their presence known in LOTS of industries. I can't say as I'm a big fan of the Taj line of hotels though (Tata owned); I'd much rather stay in an Oberoi if given the chance and the choice...

Why not sponsor Apex Motorsport's Jaguar XKRs in the FIA GT3 Championship?

Interesting when you consider they just went to the UK government for a loan to save Land Rover and Jag. They complained that commodity price drops were hurting them and they needed the help.
