Default IRL Chevy 3.5L V8 (2002)

I noticed the following engine for sale.

IRL Chevy 3.5L V8 Racing Engine

As removed from a leading IRL team Indycar chassis
Paced practice laps at Indy in 2002
3.5-liter / 214 cubic inch displacement
10,700 RPM redline
700 horsepower on alcohol
Complete with custom shipping crate and fabric engine cover
(Falconer Engines is offering some IRL Chevys with a street conversion
package, too.)

The one above happens to be full scale. For interests sake,
here is a scaled-down version of its predecessor, the IRL Olds Aurora.

Courtesy ReplicaEngines.com

I believe Carroll Shelby fitted the 4.0L L47 Auroras in his 1999 Shelby
Series 1. Forum vendor CorvetteRecycling has a new one in a crate.

I think I ran across those a few months ago. They weigh and insanely small amount. Something like 250lbs.

You can pick up an older Indycar fairly cheap to put it in.

Now THAT would be a nice track car!

BTW The engine is loosely based on the street engine.
So don't expect it to be a bolt in.

A buddy of mine did buy an Indy car for cheap, but with no motor. Where is that one, and how much is it?

Currently my buddy plans to modify the car for an electric motor, which I think is insane. Especially since he has two other race cars and two race bikes of which I think only one runs, and not very well. I'd love to see him put a real motor in the car. I know I could talk him into letting me take it out for a trackday. I'd even pay for tires and gas!

By the way, that Indy car is beautiful! The carbon fiber work, suspension, and craftsmanship is spectacular. I think he said it belonged to Robby Gordon, one other owner, and then he bought it.

If the motor price is reasonable maybe I can talk him into selling all his other race crap and putting that real motor in the car. I'd pay $1,000 to drive that thing at a trackday.

Do you think this Ryan Falconer street engine would fit in a Corvette?

Yes, the RFRE V12 will fit in a Corvette. At least it will fit in a C4.

Located in Salinas, CA. The asking price is $22.5K, but the seller states
he is authorized to consider offers.

PM on the way.

The street unit looks good in Cadillac's version of the C6.

While I think that it would be really cool to have an electric powered Indy Car, having the real thing would be ultra cool.

I'd sure love to pick up a used DP-01 with one of thoese turbocharged Cosworths. I wonder what that would cost.

I saw that car at the museum.
They had to lengthen the frame a few inches to fit the engine.

Formula Lightning is a class for converted formula cars.

They're converted Formula Atlantic cars

Ben Johnston might be a resource
New series in works with Panoz Champ Cars
AutoRacing1.com (2008.11.28)

"On Tuesday, an auction was to be held in Indianapolis to sell the 93
turbocharged Cosworth engines. This auction was ordered by the judge
after Ben Johnston negotiated for months with the Trustee and lawyers
for the estate, and submitted a purchase offer of $250,000, which was
recommended to the court by the Trustee and subject to approval by
the Judge. The Judge called for an auction, presumably to ensure the
maximum sale value for the asset, and held a hearing November 18 to
establish certified bidders and several emerged, notably Aquarium, Inc,
aka Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerald Forsythe.

The bidding on Tuesday would have quite possibly have reached into
the millions, but that did not happen.

Mr. Johnston arrived at the assigned chamber in Indianapolis Southern
District Court at 9:30 AM awaiting the 10:00 AM hearing that had been
widely noticed and published on the internet and in court documents.
But incredibly, the meeting time and location had been changed
sometime since the hearing on November 18. Not delayed or postponed
with notice, but held earlier-- in a different location.

Now that Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerald Forsythe have thrown their hat in
the ring with Tony George and the IRL, they probably do not want a
competing open wheel series to again emerge and dilute the efforts the
IRL is trying to make in restoring some of the luster in open wheel
racing in the USA. So it seems Mr. Johnston has been outsmarted and
if he is to start his Green Prix USA series he is going to have to
contract with another entity to supply engines.
"
Further legwork turns up subsequent talk about Aquarium Inc successfully
offering $600K for the 93 engines on the basis that the auction was waived.
