they are 1/3-1/2 that much from Rock Auto. OEM style is fine, just absolutely WRAP them as suggested, even if it's just cheap reflective AC tape from Home Depot. The radiant heat from the rotors destroys them.
The VBP units have a longer body with more threads....this is especially usefull with cars that have had their alignment modified for more camber. As you pull the lower control arms out, you have to un-thread the tie rods, and you end up with several fewer engaged threads when you are done.

How would you wrap them and not restrict the movement that they have to travel thru?
Maybe that "Rescue Tape" stuff? Silicone & sticks to itself? the temp rating is 500f and it's flexible.

you simply wrap around the boot. You aren't wrapping the tie rod end, just the boot. While the wrap will get get mangled over time, you can easily melt the boot off in one even if you push your car hard.

I have some sticky alum tape that I like to use over my wheel weights. That might do the trick, it sticks like crazy, have to use brake cleaner to get it off the wheels. It can be trimmed to any size with scissors.

Or, use a spherical bearing and be done with it. They're sold as bump-steer kits. As far as I can tell, they're all made by Baer. Can't be too bad, as LGM sells them too: http://www.lgmotorsports.com/catalog...364926d01fe3d1

I have mine wrapped with Thermotec tape with the added protection of a heat shield I made from soup cans. The shield is fastened under the nut that holds the tie rod stud into the knuckle. Seems to work very well. The Thermotec by itself moved around too much and left some of the boot surface exposed to radaiant heat at times.

Here are the Baer Tracker tie rod ends (bump steer kit).
If your car is lowered this may not be a bad way to go. Jegs has them for $165 a pair.
Just another option
