F5000 racing
A lap with Scooter Patrick's Surtees TS5 Formula A/F5000 car in St. Jovite 1969. The RACING SCENE 1970 Color, 90 min. It's the real stuff, photographed at real races, and you go racing with James Garner . . , star of "Grand Prix." But, this time it's for real, he owns the cars and takes you behind the scenes at Sebring, Daytona, Limerock, St. Jovite and even some of his off road racing in Baja, Mexico in his Bad Bronco. Some of Jim's playmates are Parnelli Jones, John Surtees, Roger Penske, Mario Andretti, Sam Posey, Scooter Patrick, Pat Fahey, Dick Smothers, Dave Jordan, Ed Leslie, Lothar Motschenbacher, Bob Bondurant, Larry Berquist, Fred Baker, Dick Simon, Bill Brack, Chuck Trowbridge, Rex Ramsey, Ronnie Bucknum, Bob Brown, Mike Hiss, Chuck Dietrich, Robert Fischetti, Max Kelly, Peter Rehl, John Mahler, Rich Galloway and hundreds more. You will see the real blood, sweat and tears, like Jim said, "Why couldn't it be like "Grand Prix", when you do it for real, it ain't like the movies!" Producer Barry Scholer and director Andy Sidaris filmed for nine months. John Srevens devised a tiny camera the size of a grapefruit that recorded action that will make your hair Stand on end! Made from 16mm, the film has a few scratches, but this is one you won't want to miss. James Garner, we can't thank you enough!

Watch the uprights for the rear air foil at 1:20.
I realized later that I had been spoiled by Can-Am racing at the
time and I didn't pay as much attention to F5000 as was due.
Mr Garner has always been a favorite entertainer. His interest in
motorsports is icing on the cake.

The IRL holds absolutely no interest for me, but I would go see another F5000 series in a heartbeat.

Holy ****! Those uprights don't look like they'll hold lunch, let alone aero presures at 170+. Looks like the sound was overdubed (badly) as some of those downshifts surely would have ended in a spin. /:\

A profile on Ken Smith of NZ, the driver in the earlier two videos.
66 yo in '08 (DOB '42). Triple by-pass in '87.
In the segments above, he is leading - ahead of a more powerful
car until he overcooks a corner leading onto the front straight (2:39)
and is passed by a competitor (2:43). The rest of the two segments
consists of the other car pulling away on the straights, only to have
Mr Smith out-brake him and crawl up the competitor's tail-pipes again.
At one point in traffic, Mr Smith almost succeeds at regaining the
lead.
There is a moment on the final turn. The lead car seems to have
slowed down over-much and Mr Smith has to quickly adapt. I
half wonder whether the lead car intended to turn the win over
to Mr Smith by letting him by before the flagman.

the wing placement.

I can not find an answer to the question of when the high wing was
replaced by the low wing but think it was for 1970, or 1971 latest.
