Default wheel has play in one direction - c4 autoX car

I've replaced u joints , the half shaft, and a wheel bearing a few weeks ago to get rid of a click in the left rear wheel to go to the national solo event. The last piece that was changed was the stub the wheel bearing fits on - and then I went to Kansas.

No problem was evidenced driving the 3000 miles round trip or doing the event, but last weekend I did 2 autoX events and when swapping to street tires, I noticed that same rear wheel moves about a 1/4 inch if I'm shaking it vertically. There is no movement at all if I try it at 3 and 9 o'clock.

This is much more movement than I've ever seen with other bearings that went.

Does this sound like a typical bearing on it's way out , or is there any other ideas what could cause movement like this.

Also no play is felt once car is on the ground .

thanks if anyone has ideas.

-Barbara

yes - but I wanted to swap a bearing from one car to the other if it sounded like a bearing symptom vs something else.

If it's your bearing, I've had good luck with National bearings. They are stamped with the logo also. Have seen some that aren't, and took them back even though they're in the National box.

What about VANSTEELS new rear wheel bearings. I hear they are pretty darn good? http://www.vansteel.com/index.cfm?fu...up=202&ID=2975
The clicking on mine was the splines not being greased, that go into the wheel bearing as they are two different metals.
But wheels bearings are weak on C4's, and if there is play, I say change it as it is a safety thing on racing.

A 1/4" is tremendous for a bearing. If your camber bars are locked in and the hub bolts are tight, its probably hub wear. Check all other bolts and nuts too.
If you remove you caliper, you will get hub play in any direction. You can feel play with the tires on ground, but it takes more force and skill to feel it.
If its a hub, use the superior Van Steels roller bearing hub.

Thanks everyone. I have bought a few Timkin bearings in the last 2 years but usually the wheel movement was different. I replaced this one yesterday with Napa and hope it holds up longer for autocross.

I'm keeping the car strock for another year for the SCCA events.

timken and autoxing don't go together.
even if autozone gives free replacements, it isn't worth the hassle.
