LT1 HPDE oil questions..
I've read on a few threads people are overfillign their LT1's with a quart or so... Is this the recommended procedure?!? Wouldn't GM have thought of these kinda events when they set the oil level??
Thanks for your thoughts!

I would be very careful running that on track without an Accusump. I put a canton pan on mine, and was still seeing pressure drops. Got a three quart accusump that solved the problem. I have talked to a lot of LT1 people who have spun bearings due to oil starvation.

this isnt a full on track car.. it'll probably see this event coming up on friday and maybe one other this year.. Is there someway I can mitigate the issue without spending a ton of money!?!? will the extra quart cover me for these few events?

I overfill my LT1 by about a half quart, 292 RWHP, use Redline 10W-40, no accusump, no oil cooler(285-290 deg F oil temps at the track), factory pan, 5800 redline, 14-16 track hours a year plus driving to and from the track(about 3,000 miles), change oil once a year(I do used oil analysis to monitor engine wear), R compound tires with 1.2 + lateral G's measured on a Gtech, lifetime track hours: 60-80 hours. ZERO mechanical engine problems. LT1 is a pretty tough engine.

I would put the extra oil in it...and keep your eye on the oil pressure gauge-especially in the carousel. If you see it dipping, you are shortenining the life of your engine. Some people don't have problems, like the guy above who only changes his oil once per year
See you Friday at the track.

I always go 1/2 qt to a full qt over on my LT4. Change oil once a season with 15w-50. That's about 1100-1500 track miles per season.
I have Blackstone anaylize the oil, and they say it's perfect.
This was a short season for me, I normally get 2000 track miles on a good seaon
oh yeah, no oil cooler for me. The motor is bone stock, and I won't touch it.
There is so much makeup oil going in there, it's fine.

The pan (Part #15-240T I think) is less than $300, & that is cheap insurance that would not hurt "the budget" nearly as bad as a blown engine.

I always ran an extra quart of oil in my LSX and LTx motors. I spun a main bearing this summer in my LTX motor due to oil starvation, even with the extra quart. Sydney004 is doing something right if he's driving that much and not having any issues.

upstate NY, did you get oil starvation at WGI. possibly in the toe, or outter loop ?
I have never had a problem with my LT4, but I can't watch the guage when I'm lapping. I always want to watch the guage, but I can't seem to glance down , except when on the straights....

I run 1/2 to 1 qt over in my LT1 with no issues so far (Summit Point Jefferson, Road Atlanta, let you know after next weekend about Roebling Rd)

Seriously, oil starvation issues in the LT1 are more serious than the LT/LS motors. Hard braking in an LT1 is enough to cause oil starvation from the pickup. Even with a half a qt over-fill.
Ask me how I know.

Do you feel 1/2 qt over is enough for the LS1 or LS6? Say for 5-10 hours on track per year.

Polyol Ester based oils tend to have stronger oil film strength and affinity to the lubricated surfaces and may be beneficial in applications like the LTX engines where consistent oil pressure may be problematic. Matching the proper viscosity for the intended application is important and that is where used oil analysis is very helpful. Terry Dyson at

assisted me in selecting the lubricant. On top of all that I have my fingers crossed that it does not blow up at Laguna Seca next month.
