Rationale for Corvette Racing in ALMS
I thought you all might find this interesting:
I chatted with one of the C6R mechanics while the cars were queued up to go to the pits pre-race (@ Laguna Seca.) Among other things he said that they *will* be racing at all the events next year. And he said "When you make the best sports car in the world you have to race it."
This story backs up that position pretty well:
http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/alms/41213/
He also said "look for a major announcement around November 1 or 2." When I asked what it was about he just grinned. ???

I asked him if the announcement was about racing and he said no. Which made me wonder all the more why a C6R mechanic would offer the info if it wasn't about Corvette racing...
The SEMA Show angle is interesting. I hadn't thought of that. A Google search generates these possibilities (since I was also asking him about the mule ZR1 that had just lapped the track...) Old rumors, I know, but ONE of them could be true

GM @ SEMA (last 4 paragraphs especially):

As for someone to race, he said they were hoping that Aston Martin would come back but they didn't have any firm info yet.

Plus there was another manufacture and a fourth team interested in ALMS GT1 for 2008.
We could see a Mercedes GT1 team next year. 25 specialty race prepared SLR 722 GTRs have been built
Plus we may see some JPGT Super GT500 cars in the future in GT1 racing.

From one of the articles: "Other highlights for the show include Jay Leno’s E-85 powered Corvette Z06".
Read on Autoextremist: "GM is bringing 28 vehicles to the SEMA show in Las Vegas next week with a "Corvette C6.R for the street" created by Pratt&Miller Engineering (of Corvette Racing fame) for Jay Leno being the star reveal next Monday night. The "Tonight Show" host's new supercar boasts a specially built all-aluminum 500-cubic-inch V-8 that generates over 600 horsepower on E85 fuel and is said to be spectacular."

THE States are AM largest Market. Even with ProDrive ( AM Racing ) getting an F1 Franchise for 2008, AM still needs to race GT1 to sell its GT2 & GT3 race cars in Europe.
