Default Do I have a brake problem??

I have a set of Wilwoods with the LG brackets so I can still use the stock rotors. Sunday at the Autobahn, I was experiencing an inconsistant brake peddle. During some braking, the peddle was high and nice and firm. Other times, it was about 3/4" longer and somewhat softer feel. At no time did I have any problem stopping, but the inconsistant lenght made heal and toe downshifts interesting. In the middle of the day I re-bled the brakes, using Motol 600. No cloudy fluid or bubbles in it.

Is this the piston knock-back I've heard mentioned? How do I stop it?

Thanks,
Sneidley

does the softer pedal happen after a set of high-g turns? for example a left right combo with no braking inbetween?

to combat this, just tap, and i really mean TAP the brake pedal with your left foot prior to the braking zone where it gets soft. I had the same thing happen to me at summit after the carousel (5 left/right turns without braking), and the prebrake tap has worked perfectly.

I had a long pedal at Road America 3 weeks ago. I had to left foot tap the pedal just before the brake zones for 1, 5 & Canada Corner. The pedal would be solid at 6 and so-so by hurry downs. I figured it was pad taper and used technique later in the day on Saturday. By Sunday afternoon, I was getting noise/vibration in the carousel and decided to call it a day. I had vibration when carving right turns on the way home.

It's now to the point where it hums pretty loud at 45 MPH, but gets quiet at higher speeds. I jacked up the front end tonight and have play in the left front wheel bearing/hub. Either bad bearing or loose bolts on hub.

I would check for play in bearings. If the wheel and rotor are moving around they would knock back the pistons. I'm pretty sure that was why I had inconsistent pedal at Road America.

Good Luck

Sometimes air will collect in the ABS pump and it will lead to a pedal that will be inconsistant. The best option is to bleed the system with a Tech 2. If that is not an option then bleed the car, then drive it and activate the ABS and rebleed, do this like 3 or 4 times and see if the pedal improves. It's not as thourough but it may get the air out.

Is this your first event since you've put on the Wilwoods? As the brake pad wears down the pedal will go down farther, more so with Wilwoods than stock or Stoptech.

This is my 4th day out with the Wilwoods. They stop like crazy, and the pads have hardly worn at all. I do use the racing pad, and I have the cooling to the rotors.

I'll check out getting the brakes bled with the Tech 2 and see it that helps. I'm also going to get out my dial indicator to see it there is any run-out in the rotors.

Thanks for the suggestions.

In a word, yes...

Wobble or runout in the disk is knocking the pads back, it typically comes from bad wheel bearings so start there. If the pedal is not pulsing it is most likely the bearings, although some amount of runout could also cause it...

Looks like I've got some investigating to do, checking the rotors and the bearings. I really hope its the rotors.
