Default Can you mix brake fluids?

I am doing intermediate class at VIR Saturday, so I flushed my brake system last nite and put in ATF 200. However, I ran out of fluid, so the master cylinder is not up to max, but it is above where the low fluid light comes on. Is it OK at that level? Can I mix something else with it that can be bought locally? Search showed nothing.

Just a guess but I think that mixing brands of brake fluids would be alright as long as they are of the same DOT. You might lower your wet and dry points some depending on on the mix.

...I had a similar thing happen to me when I ran out of Motul RBF 600 which I always use, so I topped up with Prestone DOT 4 that I normally only use in my clutch....no problems showed up doing this.

I will probably just mix some in as it would not be a whole lot. Thanks.

Mixing same DOT's O.K. As far as topping fluid level off, I would leave it a bit low. One time mine was up to max level at pre-inspection for a HPDE and I was told to take some out, down to about the seam in the reservoir between min and max. Because under heavy brake use it will heat up and expand. If it is too full when this happens it will make a big mess.

Actually, that is where mine is at, so maybe it is ok.

Yes, if you're at the seam between min and max you are good to go. That's where I'm running mine now on the street, I never topped it off and my pads will need replacing after my next HPDE on Nov. 19 so when pistons are pushed back for new pads, brake fluid should come back up but I'll be bleeding old fluid out and putting in new by then anyway, if not before.

Your level should be fine. BTW, DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are compatible, NOT DOT 5. I would stick with 4 or 5.1.

At the correct level (coincidence or genius? ) but you should pick up extra fluids. I carry at least 1 full change of all fluids

Good idea. I will add those to my track day checklist.

Thanks.
