Default Home made rear deck lid mount...Directions inside

I know not everyone needs an outside mount for a lap timer receiver for there car, but the mount can be used for other things……….like maybe a camera?

I needed a mounting point for the receiver to my “Long Acer” lap timer outside of the car for better reception. So I fabbed up a couple of aluminum mounting brackets that attach to the rear hatch lid. First stop was to my local speed shop, “Home Depot” to acquire a length of extruded ½” aluminum channel. Next, rummage through the scrap bin at work for a half foot square piece of 12ga. aluminum sheet metal for a nice flat mounting surface. I cut to pieces of the ½” channel, one about 2” long, the other about 3” long and debur all edges with a file. Then trim the 12ga. material down to 3”X 6” and fit to the rear deck lid after covering the painted surface with masking tape. Use one pop rivet to secure each piece of channel in place and trim excess.

Back to work for a quick TIG job to tack three spots on each piece of channel and finish cleaning up any sharp corners with a file. Add some single sided sticky rubber foam strips to the bottom side, some Velcro to the top surface to keep the receiver in place and drill a single hole for the 8-32 mounting screw that get threaded into the bottom of the receiver.

For protection, I will still cover the painted area with painters tape before mounting the bracket on the deck lid and body channel before sliding the bracket into position. Before closing the hatch, I cut down two pieces of the rubber form and attach them to the body side of the hatch area. Carefully close the hatch using the cut down rubber strips to fill in the area between the bracket and body and it’s done. The bracket can not come off unless the hatch is opened. Should be good for speeds in excess of what I will ever drive!

I made a second mirror image bracket of the first to fit on the opposite side of the car to handle both track directions. I figure the side that I’m not using for the lap timer; I will mount my Tony Hawk helmet cam on and get some good rear track footage (will post the results after the next track event).

I posted a few pics at;
