Nitrogen in tires....revisited
I see this all over the forum, and I almost always suggest that it is a waste of time except for serious racing, HOWEVER I've come across a situation that I thought would be worth sharing.
I just got a new 2007 3/4 Ton Yukon XL for towing my Featherlite trailer and Vettes. The vehicle comes with a tire pressure monitoring system.
OK, since this is a 3/4 ton, they assume you are towing all of the time appearantly. The suggested rear tire pressure are 72psi.....in other words, the tires might as well be solid rubber.
First thing I do is bleed the rears down to the same pressure as the fronts, in the high 40's. As in the past, I would just jack them back up when I hook my trailer up.
Stuping TPS tells me my tires are too low, and not only that, but ONSTAR sends me an email telling me my tires are too low. Very irritating!
Anyway, I've found the minimum pressures to make the system happy, but in this big, heavy vehicle, the pressures literally vary 10psi from morning cool to afternoon highway use, so I'm going to go Nitrogen. I plan on getting as much of the wet air out of the system as I can, and refilling a few times with Nitrogen, and see if I can get the pressure growth down to within a few pounds.
anyway, just though I'd share my irritation.

I can live with the ONSTAR messages every couple of weeks....actually nice to remind you to change your oil if you happen to be a slacker....but it's basically like having your "check engine" light on all of the time with the tires. At least until they warm up enough to hit 57psi.
Anyway, I wonder if the 08' Vettes with Onstar send emails????
