Are headlights really necessary?
Whenever I look at full blown race cars, it seems that half of them don't have any headlights - some are simply painted over. What exactly is the deciding factor if you need to have lighting on a track car?
Taking out the whole flip lights with motors would probably save a lot of weight up front, and the covers could just be fiberglassed to make it look stock. Has anyone done this to their car?

since very few groups race at night, headlights simple bring extra glass/plastic to the track, which can make a mess and also be expensive to repair/replace. As you say, most C5/c6 race cars has solid panel close-outs where the pop-ups used to be. Even the C6 World Challenge cars use Lexan covers, not the OEM sealed units.

Depends what track you are running at. When it is raining at Watkins Glen you will not be allowed to run if you do not have headlights and taillights.

Night or rain, endurance cars, 12/24 hours will obviously need them but you always have lighter wieght options. C5/C6 lexan headlight covers and windows are available at http://racingshields.com my rear window is flat lexan which bends easily into place
