Default It's a beautiful day here in Edmonton, Race Fans ...

While I'm glad to read that Hamilton appears not to be
seriously injured, I won't be watching the F1 live from
Germany tomorrow.

Sunday is the culmination of Edmonton's sole motorsports
event of any significance this season, the Rexall Grand
Prix - race #11 in the Champ Car World Series. It is a
sunny 90ºF today and similar conditions are expected for
tomorrow.

Mario Andretti is the Grand Marshall for the race and he
has been taking passengers for laps in one of the special
2-seater Minardi cars that have 3.0L V10's. These cars
are loud - I saw 124+ dB on the 'C' scale of a handheld
meter from my seat in the grandstand. By comparison,
the Champ Cars were registering about 114 dB.

I think MA was driving the lone black car in Edm today.
Two orange/white cars were also on track and one of those
drivers was REALLY making time - a great experience for his
passengers, no doubt.
"The program we have agreed for the coming season
with Kevin Kalkhoven and the senior management of the
Champ Car World Series is incredibly exciting," comments
Paul Stoddart. "It will give up to 50 lucky individuals attending
each nominated race the opportunity to have a driver's-eye view
of the track on which the Champ Car stars will be battling it out
later in the weekend.

"The Minardi two-seaters have run on the streets of some of
the world's most famous cities and at any number of well-known
race tracks, but until now, the circumstances have never arisen
to facilitate a North American program. Now, thanks to the open
-minded and innovative approach of Champ Car management, that
is set to change in the most dramatic way possible. This is
undoubtedly the most exciting development in the history of the
two-seater program, and the team can't wait to get started."
This footage is from LV, but it gives you a sense of the
experience

I hope none of the drivers pull a Mansell and spoil the program.

The first of two Atlantics races ran this morning - very close
competition between many of the cars.

Champ Car coverage is on ESPN tomorrow at 15:00 Eastern.

The organizers put on a great event here today. The weather helped
make it even better.

It is interesting to see how drivers are more circumspect this time than
they were at the inaugural event in '05 where many of them found the
walls.

It is also interesting to see a kinder, gentler Paul Tracy - he didn't even
pretend to scare other drivers, much less punt them at every
opportunity during the race this year.

Shame about Katherine Legge. Little if any sign of sponsorship on the
car and she struggled all weekend. In '05 while she was here with the
Formula Atlantics tour, she showed the boys what competition really
means and was rewarded with a #1 finish.

The Atlantics were great again this year. From this fan's perspective,
they are more entertaining because the cars seem more evenly matched.

I know the IRL/Champ Car situation is divisive, but I'll say this: if there
is a Champ Car event near you this season and if it is anything like
what we just enjoyed here, then my vote is that you'll get good value
for your entertainment dollar by attending the show.
