Here are more details about the celebration for Mike, and notes from Connie.

Michael Ross Stephens, Tulsa’s racing enthusiast and Hallett Motor Racing Circuit manager/owner, died Saturday evening at his home in Tulsa after a challenging year of an undiagnosed neurological illness.

Mike and his family have lived in Tulsa since 1970 and have been in involved with Hallett since its first event in 1976. Mike raced there for several years before he started a High Performance Driving School and then began managing the track in 1989. His wife Connie went to her first race and worked a corner with Mike on their honeymoon trip in 1965. Sons Shayne and Scott started “crewing” for Mike in 1976 when they were 10 and 7 years old. The family now owns and operates Hallett LLC. The legacy of Mike’s dream and passion and hard work will continue.

Michael R. Stephens was born September 30, 1941, in Albany, Georgia to Lovell Ross and Margaret D. Stephens. He is survived by his wife Connie, Shayne and Kelly Stephens, Scott and Jennifer Stephens, three grandchildren Shelby, Senna, and Max, sisters Cyndy McIntire, Barbara and Tom Nugent. Mike also has 10 nieces and nephews and 28 grand nieces and nephews and lots of cousins and friends. His death was preceded by his father in 1975 and his mother three days before Mike.

The celebration of Mike’s life will be at Hallett the Fourth of July. We will begin gathering around 5:30 in the afternoon. The “official” ceremony will begin at 6:45. Around 8:00 the Finish Line Café will provide a cookout (many of you may remember how Mike loved to fix hamburgers and hot dogs on Saturday nights!) When it gets dark around 9:15, there will be fireworks. If you add your fireworks to the family’s, we will make the sky even brighter for Mike.

One of Mike’s many visions for Hallett was a proper winners’ circle. The Stephens’ and their Hallett family have decided to dedicate the new winners’circle to Michael Ross Stephens in acknowledgement of his many years of looking out for the “racer.” You may send memorial donations to the address below. (Please include with your donation a clear spelling of your name the way you want it to appear on the memorial list of donors.)

Hallett Winners’ Circle,

c/o Malcolm and Barbara Joyce

403260 W. 2380 Dr.

Memorial donations may also be made to “The Good Samaritan Fund”, Boston Ave Methodist Church, 1301 S. Boston, Tulsa OK 74119.
