How can you detect knocking/pinging on track w/ all the noise?
Just curious... I added 3-5 gallons of 100 octane to my tank each day at VIR this past weekend.
My car was tuned to 13.0:1 at WOT in February. I'm guessing this is good... when it gets hot the car will get less air and get richer, correct? Where as if the car was tuned to 13.0:1 in the summer heat... it'd possibly go lean in the cold months when the air is denser correct?
I hear people saying they can detect pinging on track... how? With a helmet on, windows down, loud exhaust, header noise, driveline noises etc.... that's a bunch of other noise.
Everyone says marbles in a can etc... is it something that overpowers the exhaust note?

by the time you physically HEAR detonation, your motor has sustained pretty serious damage.
Now, if you log the timing and whatnot, you can see where the motor and ECU see pinging. The ECU will pull timing, and a lot of people look for that as a sign of detonation.

Brian, Two years ago this last weekend we were at the track together I think... That was the weekend my car threw a rod... In the video tape, you can clearly hear the rod knocking... I could NOT hear it from inside the car with the helmet on... Until it holed the block... If I couldn't hear a ROD KNOCKING, I ain't gonna hear detonation...
Food for thought.

Brian , have had that issue, blew engine #2 at Rd Atlanta in dec when it leaned out lost half of the upper ring land of #7 and the pieces were sucked up into the intake and hammered #3 as well as stacked the bearings , have taken a break from track events other than the russel school at infineon while rebuilding , and retuning .
Have added an A/F gauge where the radio was to try to minimize the time that i would have a lean condition and not know it , also have the potential with the tuning software to log the events as i drive. Its been a tedious process but am learning a lot .

I was talking to a racer who has a LS6 in his car and he said they blew one up and discovered the fule pump wasn't pumping correctly and it was creating a lean condition that led to their problem.
Glen, your's was a built modded engine, wasn't it?

Stepped on a few grandpa's crankshaft's, glad to see so many chimed in. My headers and Borla Stingers at 120 plus next to the wall are awesome. That with some hearing loss due to being around jet engines for 30 years leaves me depending on the grandsons for ping detection.
