On a rail from backt to front to get me that extra car length when we need it...

Since mine is still borrowed it is taped in (very well!) to the air intake of the radiator and the wires run to the battery or a switched fuse.

It is safer to mount them inside the trunk well and power them from the lighter port..

I've been renting a re-chargeable one, just zip tie it to the license plate holder.

Put it as close to the front of the car as you can, like right behind the bumper cover. You want to trip the meter as soon as you can for qualifying or photo finishes. If you put it in the trunk and I put it way at the front and we finish side by side, who is going to be the winner? Even if you are ahead a half a foot I will cross the line first electronically and still win on the clock...

He is asking for TT which measures only lap time so it does not really matter where it is - for W2W you are right.

When I rent one I put it in the rear compartment (Left or Right depending upon what direction we are running that day). Not racing so all I care about is lap times. It works just fine there.

For those with a CD changer in the center rear, I just tape it to the side
of the unit, tab down. Now at four tracks that has worked fine, Sears Point,
Thunderhill, Laguna Seca and Buttonwillow. Then I go to Reno-Fernley
and it picks up every other lap four times in a row, 8 laps with
4 readings, very odd, back to putting it on the rear licence frame with
zip and tape. Just for TT it works.

Put some blue tape on the louvers to protect it from getting beat up and always use more then one zip tie!

I have mine mounted to the inside of the front inner wheel well housing. It works nice because you can use the DRL circuit to wire it and that way it is hot at key up

For permanent, I put them in the front fender well, up where the brake ducts go through.

However, in my race car, I have it zip-tied to the passenger floor, and it goes through the balsa wood just fine.

for lap times, how would transponder placement have any affect?

for races, its who's car crosses the line first, not transponder...

For TT if its a rechargeable unit you can zip tie it inside the handle of the door between the handle and the door panel. It works fine right through the door on my Z06 and only takes a minute to put in and take out that way. If its wired then the posts above make more sense.
