There's a couple of hotels in Seaside that're closest to the track. But anywhere in Monterey isn't too far away.

Aug. 12 thru Aug. 20 rooms will be expensive due to the Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance/Monterey Historics weekend

Salinas is only 10-15 minutes away as well with cheaper rates.

Just don't go into downtown Salinas at night. Seriously.

Isn't there a Comfort Inn or Quality Inn at 68 and Airport Rd. that's reasonable? It's about 4 miles from the track towards Monterey. I stayed there once but it's been a while, usually stay at the track.

Here is an actual suggestion, this is where Tintin stays :

http://www.woodsidehotels.com/monterey/index.html

Pleasant atmosphere right on the bay and nice but not fancy.

A lot cheaper than the Lodge at Pebble Beach and you don't have to dress for dinner. There are a lot of fancy shops at PB as well , so if your wife accompanies you she will be bored and spend a pile of ducats for clothes and things , ask me how I know.

I stay at the Motel 6 in Monterey. There is a bowling alley across the street, a Denny's a half block down and an adult bookstore next door and the track is a few miles away. I don't know what else a guy needs.

The Lodge at Pebble Beach is simply amazing if you don't mind spending a little $$$

The cheapest place by far is the Good Night Inn in Salinas. However, at this late date, there may not be any accommodations left anywhere for Monterey Historics weekend.

Place to sleep and take a shower. I stayed there the last few years for the ALMS and WC races

Laurel Inn Motel:
831-449-2474
801 W Laurel Dr
Salinas, CA 93906

I've stayed there several times. Good quality rooms, a nice restaurant on premises, a pool, and a good price.

If you stay in or near Monterey you will pay a small fortune. I paid $188 a night to stay in a hotel in Monterey the weekend before the Historics in 2002. Then I paid less than half that price to stay at the Laurel Inn the weekend of the Historics that same year.

I'll be there just after the historic are done. I'm a bit leery of staying in Salinas though. I'd prefer Seaside or Monterey.

There are so many Hotels, it's hard to pick one sight unseen. so I'm just looking for some feedback.

Good choice though a better choice would be to stay at the Naval Post Graduate School or Presidio of Monterey if you are eligible.

Don't sweat Salinas. I stay at the Quality Inn when I go to the ALMS race. No issues and a few other vette owners stay there as well.

For the Monterey Historics I stay downtown at the Merritt House Inn.

For the ALMS race or trackdays I've stayed in Salinas (Laurel Inn or Good Night Inn)

If you are looking at a low price like $188 and you think that is a lot for a hotel, don't take my suggestions or BowmanM's either..
The Plaza is about $450-600 a night and the lodge is about $800-$2000-. I misunderstood your plans, sorry. There is a Best Western on the Beach at the track exit from Hwy 1 on 218 to Del Ray Oaks that has a good location and is very inexpensive like under $160-. I have not stayed there but it looks quite good although far from restaurants.
I will say that the best food in the area is north on hwy1 to Moss Landing - go into the little town area and eat at Phil's. It has great seafood. We used to drive down there when I lived in the Bay Area and make an evening of it.

Make sure you do the 17 mile drive on a weekday, it is really spectacular.
