Gawd some of those guys are awfull drivers. Very bad examples of driving. But good examples of what money does, get you a ride not matter what your skill or lack there of is.

Some of the offs in both races could have been avoided if VIR would keep up on needed maintaince. Lots of pot holes on one end or the other of many many gatters, not to mention the ruts on the edge of the track in lots of places too.

I agree about the rough edges. Some really big potholes to deal with. A simple 2-wheel off broke the radiators in the Porsche, and took several tires off of the beads. Problem is, if they fix the spots, we're more likely to drop tires off. They eventually give up.

I wanted to mention 2 things. Boss's off at 7 was a classic VIR rookie mistake. There is a peak in the track at 7, and you need to make DARN sure your front wheels are straight when you top it. I warn my students EVERY SINGLE lap until they get it right. If you don't learn those habits early, when you build speed, dangerous situations are destined.

As for Collins off, that pot-hole was HUGE back last month when I was their with THSCC. There is absolutly no way he could have overlooked it, and extremely frustrating to see such a renowned driver drop a wheel into a 16" deep hole! From Lazy spins at LeMans to stunts like this....really makes me get upset with GM's factory-backed driver line-up.

Yep - that hole after the curbing exiting 15 is another every-lap student comment - "don't go all the way to the edge - there's a HOLE - drop two and you will spin!!!!" Guess we have examples to use now...

The P-cars definately need a upgraded radiator. I will bet 90% of them that had DNf's went because the radiator was busted.

....dropping a wheel into a pot-hole on what is essentially a strait-away (between 15-16) is NOT driving 10/10th's, it's driving 12/10th's....

aahh, that sounds more like it. Someone should have told him about the mile-long straight-away he had just come off of....plenty of time for fidling.

I'm just giving these guys a hard time...they are all great drivers. I thought it was worth posting since the NCM VIR event is coming up. The race really did stress some of the problem spots at VIR, and they can bite anyone if you drop your concentration for even a second.

David. Thanks for posting the video clips. I was on pitroad during the GT race, rushed to get back to the hotel to watch the race. Dang hotel did not have SpeedTV!!!

Looks like Kelly did the right thing (once he fell into that monster ditch). He drove off, instead of hooking back across into the tire barrier. Cut his losses, did the veteran move of coming straight to the pits. Smart racer.

Here is another clip, this time of the DP qualifying. I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but unless you've driven a car flat out into the S's, you may not even realize the "crest" of the hill is so dangerous. I warn my students from the very beginning, as if they approach the turn faster and faster and faster, they need to realize the hump is there.

You need to have your front wheels straight as you crest the hump, or this can happen (same as Boss's above). Many fast cars have been totalled here since 1999.

I wish I'd been your student last year. I made this mistake and did $14k of damage to my car. I'll make sure whoever my instructor is this year at NCM that he shows me the proper way to take the Ss--as well as the rest of the track. Going home in one piece--both me and the car--is my objective.

Trouble is, a lot of people don't know how dangerous that spot is. I was fortunate to have someone point it out to me my first visit to VIR. It's obvious once it is shown to you (isn't everything).
