GM scaling back on RWD

The new legislation requires a 30 percent increase in corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) by 2017; a target that would be difficult to achieve with a number of powerful rear-wheel-drive vehicles in production.
Thankfully, the much-anticipated Chevrolet Camaro is still going ahead for production in 2009 due to its late stage of development. The future is less certain for any other rear-wheel-drive models that GM has planned, including the next Chevrolet Impala, a new Buick sedan and a baby Cadillac coupe.

My C4 too. Corvettes are on the right path. Keep getting lighter etc. They want to make more FWD cars so they can sell more crossovers and SUV's Of course crossovers are just as heavy was the SUV's they're replacing. I just don't get it.

AWD helps you go, but does it help you stop and turn?
and what about the extra weight?
AWD cars clean up in the rain, or on loose pavement, but dry tarmack is another matter.

As for GM ever offering the Corvette with AWD, forget about it.
AWD is expensive and heavy. High engine torque makes it even more heavy and expensive.
Also AWD requires the engine at the back, so a complete redesign.
Don't even think about front engine and AWD in a real sports car. This is the setup in Audi, Subaru, etc. The engine is in the nose of the car, before the front axle. Weight distribution 60% front =>
