Mounting Fire Extinguisher on Harness Bar - Any Reason Not To?
Any reason I shouldn't mount the extinguisher on the harness bar? I DON"T want to mount in front of the seats as most of you do.

My extinguisher is mounted on the back side of the harness bar on the passenger side. I used U-bolts to attach the extinguisher mount to the bar. The clamps on the mount are pointed such that I have to flip the tabs upward. This allows the weight of the extinguiser to release the clamps and it will fall right into my hand.
One problem with the extinguisher on the floor is that if you wear a harness you have to almost completely release the harness from yourself in order to reach the front of the passenger seat where the extinguisher would be mnounted. With it mounted on the harness bar, I can still reach it even if my harness is still connected and tight.
BTW, Dan at Vetteworksonline does make some great stuff. Good guy and easy to deal with. I bought my extinguisher from him and one of his mounting brackets for my old 92.

I do not have an extinguisher in my car yet. But with a Kirkey RR seat
and a 6-pt harness, the question of how to reach an ext. mounted on
the pass floor in an emergency concerns me, too. Perhaps I haven't
thought about it enough but when strapped in, I'm not sure I could be
confident of reaching an extinguisher mounted behind on the harness
bar. I plan to begin using a HANS and wonder whether this further limits
mobility for reaching around and behind. I've considered mounting at
the base of the driver's seat, but that is not completely satisfactory,
either.
An idea I've considered wouldn't meet the needs of some but it
seems like it would be simple and place the extinguisher within
reach while belted in. Remove the pass seat and substitute a plate
with the extinguisher mounted here. No good for sessions where you
take passengers/instructors, but the C4 seat attaches to the base
with four easily removed bolts.
For a dual-purpose car like mine, such a plate could give me a base
for a good sized extinguisher, my datalogger and some other stuff.
Swapping would just be a matter of minutes and the base could go
on the shelf between events.

Of course there's all sorts of scenarios where either method could be argued to be the "best" or "worst" way to mount an extinguisher. Hit the swtich and get out
I've never looked to see if there're low-cost (relative term) built-in systems like actual race cars use that could be used in a street car.

I tried mounting to the rollbar between the seats and found I could not reach the extinguisher by just putting my right arm back. I actually had to twist around in the seat which meant I had to loosen the harness. Besides I was a little worried about it becoming a missile during an incident. Thus I put the extinguisher on the floor in front of the drivers seat. I still have to take off the harness but can get the thing as I am getting out of the car.
