Default Tired of the handicaps on the C6R

Now that the Corvette has been handicapped to the point it is not competitive and the Aston Martin finally won a race, is there a chance the weight penalties and smaller fuel tanks imposed on the Corvette will be lifted?

It's boring to see the Corvette relegated to running behind faster GT1 cars and the only chance of the the C6R winning is for the competition to breakdown or crash.

It's common courtesy on this board to to add the word "Spoiler" to the title of a post which discusses race results before the race is shown on TV

Racing body organizations will usually add some sort of handicap to a (new) car if they win by large margins ovfer a couple of seasons. The C5R's were very hard to beat (in spite of mechanical breakdowns by other cars) so the C6R got the handicap for this year. Supposedly this keeps the other cars in "competition" so the teams don't get frustrated and move to other venues.

If A-M keeps winning, I would expect to see them saddled with some sort of handicap for their next season. I really don't see handicaps on the C6R being lifted, just other cars being slowed down as they prove to be consistent winners.

"Run what ya brung" doesn't work anymore. Sponsoring corporations want to see winners, and the sanctioning organizations want to see competition.

From corvetteracing.com, Doug Fehan's comments...

The Corvettes were carrying 199 more pounds than the Aston Martins, running smaller intake restrictors, and using smaller fuel tanks as a result of "balance of performance" adjustments mandated by the sanctioning body.

"At some point in time we knew that the 200 pounds and the restrictor would be too much to overcome, and today turned out to be that day," said Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan. "It was certainly one hell of a battle, and it's a good thing for Aston Martin that the race wasn't about four feet longer. I think the fans got their money's worth today."

Incredibly close finish. What would that C6R do with an open intake and less weight

yeah, its pretty clear that the weight + smaller intake has severly hampered the corvette team. watching the coverage today you could tell that given equal corner exits the aston would pull strongly on the straights.

i know alms is just trying to build competition, but at some point you are just punishing the best team. hell, what happens when something clicks for aston and they shoot ahead. i doubt corvette will get an immediate reconciliation. that being said, johnny O is some kind of driver.

Great race and I hate to say it, I expected this would happen. We gave the brits a hell of a fight. If we hadn't lost #4 we would have had em. Look at the ending, #3 was pulling strong, another 4ft we wouldn't be having this conversation!

Having the Astons win is good for business though. While it's good that the Corvettes win, it would get boring if only the Audi and Corvette won races.

Kind of like how Ferrari completely dominated F1 for a while. You knew they were going to win so why watch?

Open Intake?? umm car has somewhere close to 625 BHP now with the TWO quarter size restrictors, one in each air intake ( the LS7.R does not use Throttle bodies). Without the restrictor plates HP is just north of 900bhp. My guess is it would be just about as fast as the LMP1 cars, not quite but darn close.

Tell us more about this "no throttle bodies" ... what does the throttle connect to?

Katech useing somthing differnt on each on the 8 ports. 4 right ports are on one air intake and 4 left ports are on another air intake.

I saw the discription by one of the katech ppl over on LS1 tech. Let me see if I can find it.

I would rather the ALMS mandate the AM to take weight out of their car and use a larger restrictor than saddle the C6R with restrictions.

I realize that its extremely difficult to take weight out of a built race car though, so something in between would probably be realistic.

I want the Prodrive teams to be competitive, and I would like it if Dodge brought back a factory-backed Viper team, just something to keep it interesting for other fans and increase the popularity of the sport. Go ahead and kick Saleen out because theyre never going to get it right.

Lime Rock wouldnt be the place I'd expect the Corvette to lose though.

Huh?

S7Rs have won 50 races around the world, including the (GTS class) 2001 Twelve Hours of Sebring and Laguna Seca in 2001.

Zakspeed's S7R won an FIA GT race at Brno (Czech Republic) against several DBR9s, MC12s, a Murciealgo R-GT, and one C6-R.

Oreca's S7R won at the 1,000 km of Spa in May.

Oreca and/or Acemco may run at Petit Le Mans.

Its embarrassing. The only race they were competitive in last year, they ended up breaking something else. I dont think they should be in the series right now.
