Default Tires for OEM Thin spokes

My friend is just getting into road courses and wanted to use his thin spokes until he can decide if he likes this or not.

I looked around for OEM size tires that will fit the thin spokes and found the

Kumho ECSTA SPT

Kumho ECSTA MX

Is one better than the other (maybe RA1) - also does he have other choices???

Thanks

Bob

I'm assuming he's wanting to stay with only one set of wheels. If that's the case, then I'd run the SPTs. Reason is that they're cheaper than the MXs, will serve him well on the street, and won't throw everything onto the paint during the 90+% of the time he's not racing.

Keep the tire pressures up and OE-level brake pads on the car, and he shouldn't have too much problems with them coming apart.

Now, if he's willing to go with a 2nd set of wheels, then I'd recommend the RA-1s. They're a great to-from set of tires, and I think they'll wear as good as or better than a set of street tires.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

thanks - these will be track tires, but he will need to use them to and from the track.

He has another set of street tires.

He is also switching to Hawk Pads, but that is it.

In that case, I'd go for either the MXs or RA-1s. One thing I thought about after my original post was the cost difference between the two; the RA-1s can be pricey.

Have a good one,

I saw the MXs in stock OEM sizes and not the RAs.

What are the biggest tires he can put on stock size wheels (F/R)?

RA1's size wise....

would a 235/40R17.....25.4 for an 8 inch wide rim
and a 275/35R18........25.6 for a 9.5 inch wide rim work?

obviously theyre' a lil off from factory.

If he's never done an HPDE before, he doesn't need R compounds. As a matter of fact he should stay away from them for a while. MX's are fine and cheap. They are my street tire and I have used them on the track succesfully. Not as grippy as the C5 F1 tire, but about 90%.

I'm running 275/305 on wagon wheels.

Have a good one (and a great Memorial weekend!)

If he wants a great handling tire and streetable look at the Falkin 615. He can run the 255/40x17 front and 275/35x15 rear. This keeps his ride height ratio correct and give him great traction tire that does well in the rain.
