Default How do you attach your numbers?

I'm running my first "real" autocross this weekend down in Nashville. I'll have to put some numbers on the car, and they have to be on a body panel, not the glass, as I'm sure you all know.

My time frame is too short to get static cling letters but I would still like it to look professional. I've printed up my letters and numbers, my brother is going to laminate them tonight. What can I use to tape them to the side of a C4 that won't destroy the paint and won't leave too much of a sticky residue to clean off?

A friend of mine uses blue painters tape but that's gonna look a little tacky on my bright yellow numbers. Are there any clear tapes out there that would be good to could use, and hopefully get before Sunday?

Stop at OfficeMax and pick up some "Repositionable Bumper Sticker Film"...put it in your printer and print your numbers and letters or just trace some numbers on the film and cut them out. A package will cost you about $10.

3M painters tape...and make sure you get the number 1 or 7 or any combination of those two

Seriously, I've been running #7 locally for the year and a half I've autocrossed and, while I do have a reuseable vinyl #7, 90% of the time I just use the painters tape

www.solotime.com--buy a set then make copies using the orginal set as a template . High Performance shelf paper from Wallyworld works great.

Yea, I guess you could always print numbers and then cover them with clear shelf paper on the car. In fact, I woulder if you could use magnetic numbers and just stick them on with a nicely cut square piece of shelf paper. That way the numbers can easily be reusable. I run at Sebring and Homestead so I will test this idea at about 140MPH and get back to you.

I made a template by printing out the numbers possible on MS Word as large as it would print then enlarging on a copy machine at work. I then took a roll of shelf paper ($5 at home depot) and cut out some numbers using the templates I made. Cheap and effective. At the end of the day I just peal off the numbers and throw them out. The only time I had a problem was one time when it was misting out when I put the numbers on. Otherwise no problems holding beyond 130 mph.

I tried resuable numbers. The first time they were good. taking them off and putting them back on the second time they looked like chit.

I got my vinyl numbers from Pittmanperformance.com I just leave the numbers on, but I dont drive the car much on the street.

Go to your local "Signs R Us" shop and get a 24 x 36 sheet of static cling vinyl and cut them out yourself.

I printed my numbers out in bright yellow on regular paper and had my brother laminate them for me last night. Now all I need is a way to attach them. I like the shelf paper idea, I think that will be my best bet.

I print out my numbers and then cover them with shelf liner to mount them. I've used the same set for a year of autox and 4 track weekends. It works fine. Just put them on the peel off backing when you are done.

Once the edges don't stick so good you can use the blue painters tape to hold them. You're not getting style points out there....

I went to my local sign shop and had them put my numbers on a 8.5"x11" clear sheet. The numbers have lasted 3 years of autocrossing with very little wear.

Took about an hour and $20.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Blue and/or white painters tape works good enough for the short term, and the static cling work well long term.

So, if I am understanding, they cut vinyl numbers for you and applied them to a static cling reusable sheet?

If so, and it works, that will be great. I used to own a sign shop and own a vinyl cutter to do my own banners and such for my current business. I'm kinda picky and want them to look good.

Off to the supplier tomorrow to get some static cling reusable vinyl tomorrow

Thanks!

Make sure you tell him it's for a Corvette as he also makes magnetic numbers for steel cars.
