can C5 calipers fit a 1.38 inch width rotor?
thinner pads, or whatever
the gain from 1.25 to 1.38, would seem
to be more useful than the
drilled or slotted wierdness.

Sure with thinner pads you could fit a 1.38" rotor but I think it would be worse. The thinner the pad the easier to transfer heat to the caliper which is the weak point of stock C5 brakes (why I upgraded mine). You are correct that Drilled will do nothing for you.

Drilled and slotted rotors are 40 year old technolgy that some maketing departmetns wont let die as some ppl still want to buy OLD technology.
Thinner pads are not really a good thing either as they will ware out sonner.
when a normal pad is at 50% thickness, that does not mean there is 50% life remaining. only about 30% life remaining.
Thicker pads are better and just change the rotors.
Wilwood makes Calipers that can use thicker pads on the stock Raybetous rotor. John Shiels used them for a bit then he got some stoptech 2 piece rotors.
