Default Toyo RA1s or Nitto NT-555RIIs?

Making the switch from GYSCs on stock '02 C5-Z06 rims (275F/295R) to something else for HPDEs this year.

Trying to decide between the Toyos or Nittos (275F/305R). Heard both are the same compound, despite having different tread patterns, etc.

Any opinions on which one to select? Where's a good place (online/phone order most likely) to get either from?

Thanks!

Both tires are made by Toyo. Both compounds are the same. Differences are tread design and depth (Toyos are 1/32 less), and sizing. Carcass of the RA-1 and RII are the same, according to the Toyo rep. Toyos tend to be pricier, from what I have seen.

Do not overlook the new Nitto NT-01 race tire. It is a newer version of the RII. Do not know what the Toyo counterpart will be.

Nitto full tread depth. Toyo half tread depth. Then you get a slick for the remaining life of the tire. I have Toyo's and they hook up all the way to the cords. Good place for Toyo tires is.

I used the RIIs for a while and liked them alot...I felt as though, for the price, there was better options out there, especially if the tires were solely track tires. I will say though, if you are moving up from a street tire, the RII is a nice jump (and safe). i have since moved on to hoosier scrubs (Rolex GT and GACs)...obviously the difference is day and night, but do require your FULL attention.

Toyo claims that there tire starts with 8/32. I think it's more like 6/32. If that's the case, then you would get 3/32 tread, 3/32 slick with 4 grooves around tire.

Steve,

How long do your RA1's last? I've just burned thru my second set of R2's; These lasted less than 5 trackdays (500 track mi.); still some resemblance of tread on fronts but have significant understeer (same condition as you saw at WSIR in Jan.). I'm considering trying the RA1s if I can get 1 or 2 more trackdays out of them.

Hi Joe
Thanks for the shock link. My Toyo's only last 5 to 6 track days. When new they don't work as well as when they get worn out. You have nothing to lose in buying them. It's not like there going to last you a year or two. From what you have told me about Nitto's I think the Toyo's are better. They hook up all the way to the cords. After every track day, I switch the tires side to side. No problem in running the tires backwards. Not dismounting just switching to different sides.
Go to that link above for pricing. About $1060 delivered.

Let me know if you have more question.

I run RA1s on the track, often leaving them mounted between events on my Z06 daily commuter. They are ok with full tread (though a bit squirmy), not chunking or blistering like some, and as just noted by Mountainbiker2, keep getting better as they become slicks after 3-5 weekends. If I didn't drive my car to the track, I would keep them even longer. As cross-over track/street tires, they are about the only game in town. I seldom see the Nittos at the track so can't comment. A few drivers like the pricey Mich Pilot Cups, but they come in limited sizes and have warm-up issues.
