New Car + Porter Cable + Yellow Pad = Paint on Pad and Towel?!?
My buddy just took delivery of his new Lancer Evo (manufactured in March '03) and received it w/ swirls galore....I buffed it w/ my PC on medium speed w/ 39009 w/ a little water on the pad as a cutter. After going through the usual motions, buffing it until it turns into an oily consistency....i wiped it off w/ my charisma towel and noticed a little red on the towel (the car is painted red).
My friend is losing his mind thinking i went through the clear coat...i've done this 100 times and never saw paint on the pad or towel. Is this paint overspray from the factory? I'm sure i didn't go through the clearcoat as i used a clean yellow pad and only 39009 SMR...
So whatdya detail guru's think?
*a side note, the swirls are completely gone and the paint looks great*
I don't think you can remove clearcoat with your PC and yellow pad. You will need a rotary for that and something really abrasive or wet sanding.
The second post is talking about how to tell if a paint has clearcoat or not.

I just looked at my 2003 color codes for Mitsubishi and there is only 1 red for the EVO called Phoenix Red, P85. I can assure you that the car is supposed to have a clear coat on it. With the car being made in March, it should have had plenty of time for the paint to fully cure, so you really might want to tell your friend to bring it to the dealer and have them look at it. Something is not right.

I just re-read you post, you do know that when you add water to an abrasive compound that you make it MORE abrasive by doing so, NOT less abrasive.....

I did not say he messed up the paint, but when you add water to an abrasive compound you thin out the carrier the sold abrasives are held in thereby making the product in fact more abrasive where most think it makes it less abrasive.

I'm well aware of the effects water has when combined w/ a buffer and any abrasive....that was my intention.
I'm not exaggerating when i say that this kid's car was swirled up beyond belief. I've worked w/ my buffer on numerous cars and always found that using water helps in buffing out swirl marks..and have never had paint come up on the pad or towel. In fact, later that evening we used straight 3M 39009 and a towel (no buffer or water) and paint came up on the towel.
It's obvious to me now that this kid has no clearcoat...I just never fathomed a brand new car coming from the factory in 2003 and not have a clear coat.
JIMBONIC..I think i recall my friend saying his car was "rally red", not sure though.

Hey Pete, Have your buddy take a look in his glove box and see if he can find the color code number in there. It should be there or under the trunk lid I believe. If he can find it, I can verify absolutely that it should have clear on it and would have to go back to the factory!
Also, It could be called Rally Red at the dealer and sticker, but the factory calls it different names  They do it for a lot of different colors.
I also looked a another source of info, PPG and they show that the code 85 red paint for the EVO is NOT a clear coat! DuPont on the other hand shows it is! Something is not right here and I will get some better answers tomorrow :smash: :flag
