Default Opticoat questions

My Tundra is never garaged and needs to be waxed about 3 times a year. Paint is dark green. I been thinking of applying Opticoat to it and have a couple of questions.

Truck is a 2013 and paint is in great shape other than a chip or two. Do I need to do anything other than wash and clay prior to applying the opticoat?

Have any of you actually tried this on your daily drivers that are not garaged and do you actually think it will give protection for 2 full years?

I am not sure how familiar are you with OptiCoat, but please understand this is a “permanent” coating unlike a wax or sealant than will need to be reapplied every 4-6 months. So if you plan on doing this, you have to make sure your paint is as perfect as you want it to be. Correct any/all chips, scratches, swirls, etc before applying OptiCoat. If you don’t you are pretty much locking in those imperfections.

I am fine with how the paint looks.
Have you used it? How long does it last?

I applied it on my last daily driver and more than 18 months later it was still present when sold. I applied the original version, for professionals, on a well garage kept Cadillac that is now over 4 years old (only 20k miles) and still present. Optimum has made the product easier to apply as the original needed the high spots buffed off quickly. It will change your mind about protection, guaranteed.

Now as to the original question. You should indeed take the time to properly prep the paint prior to its application. I would consider Iron-X, Claying, and Polishing, and an alcohol wipedown before application even if just a light polishing. You will live with the outcome for several years. The only way to remove the product is thru abrading the surface.

It is advertised as lasting for the life of the car.

Just another false ad?

I have no doubt that is will outlast anything else on the market but wonder if for a decade or more is possible with a garaged kept car and not a DD.

Due to the lack of responses I am guessing none of you guys (other than the people who sell it) have actually tried this product?

It almost sounds too good to be true.

The product has been around for at least 3-4 years and has many positive reviews. Perhaps you should consider visiting some outside car care forums.

I have been applying it on my two daily drivers once per year and have had zero issues.

Once a year as a layering application?

I have opticoat on my GTR, SL63, and had it on my CTSV

Applied after full paint correction of course.

My question is, I had my wheels and glass done. I am assuming that wheel cleaner will remove it correct?

I apply it on my Hummer and Expedition every 12 months. Nothing but washings in between. Zero issues!

Wheel cleaner won't remove it.

It should be noted that the product has changed and is more user friendly in application and removal time. The manufacturer has reduced the length of protection mainly because it hasn't been around long enough to measure the outcome, buts it still likely the longest coating known to date. It also has more gloss now. Its now called Optimum Gloss-Coat and there is still a professional version that can only be purchased thru authorized detailers under professional application only.

I purchased my2011 GS (CRM) this past December. I couldn't believe the condition of the paint. There isn't a swirl mark on it and the polish is excellent. I was told by the dealership that the previous owner had Opti-Coat applied to the car. Has anyone had it applied to their car(s) and if so, how long have you had it on the car? Also how has it held up and how long is it expected to last. I will only be driving mine on the weekends, car shows, cruises, etc. so it won't be driven in inclement weather, which I imagine would lengthen the life of the coat??? Any feedback is appreciated.

you likely have nothing to worry about for many years. Wash properly using good washing/drying techniques and keep it stored as offered for many years of protection. The only real way to remove it is with polishing and abrading the surface.

Thanks for the feedback. One other question, will using quick detailer along with a microfiber towel to remove any dust cause any swirls or effect the coating? Just want to be certain so that I keep the finish as it is now for as long as possible. Thanks.

It won't hurt the coating, but depending on what product you're using, the quality of the towel, your technique, and what you are wiping off will make that determination. Its very easy to put swirls in. If the car is dusty, wash it, don't wipe it.
