my wife and i picked up an '03 Z to replace an '01 we had. it came with some wilwood compound h pads on it. they're great pads other than the noise and crazy amounts of dust. anyways, after driving it in the rain a couple of times with some dust on there, it's gotten stuck to the wheels. i usually use eagle 1 all wheel and tire cleaner and it usually works great. it has nothing for this dust. i tried some sonax full effect wheel cleaner at the suggestion of a friend. it's a really good wheel cleaner, but it's not cutting some of the caked on stuff. i don't want it to stay on there because it'll ruin the wheels. anyone have any suggestions for getting it off of there? we have C6 Z replicas in a black powdercoat.

Probably won't work if the wheel cleaner didn't...but Windex and a good rubbing always worked for me on the tough spots.

I mix a little brake parts cleaner in with Black Magic wheel cleaner, if they aren't painted rims used very fine steel wool, 00. It's the same methode to polish chrome so it will take pretty much anything off. I'm cleaning some chrome wheels right now, very stubborn, and it get's those little black dots of as well.

A friend once bought a used Audi, which had very bad brake dust caked on. I tried Purple Power cleaner and it came right off. Dilute the concentrate a bit.

After you clean the wheels...put some wax on them, and they'll be easier to keep clean

Until I change pads, I use this stuff, it's amazing...though when water hits it I have to redo it. They even sell it at Target. Watch the Video....

Cleaning is easy, I like the Armor All spray stuff....it works real good. (better then Meguiars in my experience) But with stock or some aftermarket pads they are dirty after one drive. The Armor-All stuff I posted above keeps the dust from sticking. Where I was freaking after one drive, now I go 2 weeks or more between wiping them down and re-applying. Only driving through water messes it up.

Simple Green works wonders. Spray it on, let sit for 30 seconds, wipe off and rinse well with lots of water.

I use Fantastic successfully. I agree with the Purple Power also. Don't let it stay on your skin long. It really removes all the oils form any and everything. It will burn after a while.

Interesting product. I find myself cleaning my chrome Z06 rims with windex after EVERY ride from the oem brake pad dust, and frankly I'm getting tired of doing this to the point of trying not to brake as much as possible. Does this stuff actually keep it as clean as the day it was washed or can you still see some brake dust. Water is not an issue as I don't drive it in the rain.

Having dealt with a customer who did this very same thing on a Lightning truck with his BBK....he spend countless hours and money to have the entire white truck clay-blocked to remove this. Not good.

The problem is that the 'dust' you think you have is about half brake dust and half iron particles of the rotor being eaten up by the pads. Being somewhat hot and deposited on the paint it sticks. Then in a short time the water turns it to rust and bonds it to the paint finish.

While I'm certain this is not exactly what you wanted to hear the bottom line is that H pads are NOT street pads and such use creates this type of negative byproduct. Not that it cannot happen on the track either however. The best bet for dust is to blow it off as best you can well before you attempt to wash. Or as others suggest some wax or treatments on the clean wheels (body?) can help prevent this adhesion. *However much of their results appear more geared towards street pad use and not the high metallic compounds race pads which are a totally different animal.

Mild soap and water or Carwash soap it is PH Balanced - rinse and dry off = Best results by far!

Sonax is safe for painted and metal wheels and can be left on a bit longer for caked on dirt. You can also use a product from Griots which is a high performance wheel cleaner. Sometimes a brush like our Daytona Wheel Brush can help too. The problem with leaving any brake dust on wheels for too long at it will etch the surface. You can even use clay and a paint polish as needed.
