DeWalt 5" Variable Speed Random Orbit

Whats the difference in the Dewalt and the PC? Will the Dewalt work as good as the PC? It's on sale at lowes and much less expensive than the Porter Cable. Thanks, Jeff

I think I would go with the Porter Cable or the UDM. JMHO

Not sure which Dewalt model of the 5" you're looking at so it's hard to say.

They have 2

1. Model # D26450

It's a fixed speed (12,000 OPM) with a 3 amp motor

2. Model # D26453

Random speed (7,000-12,000 OPM) with the same 3 amp motor.

The orbit diameter is 3/32"

The Porter Cable

uses a 3.7 amp motor
Variable speed (2,500-6,000 OPM)

I have an older model Dewalt out in the garage and I compared it to my porter cable.

I think an important aspect is the orbit diameter. On the PC it seems to be a LOT larger than the Dewalt. The Dewalt is almost like a mini-rotary with very little OD where as the PC has a larger OD. Add to the fact the Dewalt has a smaller motor designed for sanding wood with a 5" sanding disk, I think it would have a hard time making a dent in the clearcoat of a corvette.

Thanks for the info....the one i was looking at is the D26453K and it's normally 90.00 on sale for 45.00. According to what you wrote, the DeWalt might have too high opm.

For 45.00 I may buy one for my wood working since my Dewalt is pretty old. The sanding pads are generic and will fit it so that's a plus.

If I pick it up today I'll try it out on my GF's old SUV work truck. The paint is shot anyway so I'll slap on a buffing pad and see what happens.

Well I just called 3 of my local Lowe's stores and they still have them priced at 89.97 So it doesn't look like I'll be buying a new sander today.

I'm glad it worked for you. Soooo, do you think this DeWalt goes too fast to use for polishing the car? The last thing I want to do is mess up the paint.

*my* opinion (and take it for what it's worth), I don't think I would use it on my corvette. Besides it spinning to fast, the orbit diameter is much smaller than that of the porter cable buffer. It may turn it into a mini-rotary and cause some damage to your paint.

If anything, try it out on an old junker first to see if it's going to have any problems.

Thanks for the info........i won't get it for the Vette, but I might get one for the heck of it....in case I ever need to sand something. lol
