I do a 50/50 mix of simple green. I cover the alternator with aluminum foil and other electricial components. I then spray the mix of simple green and let it set for a couple minutes then I rinse lightly with my hose. Before I remove the foil I used either my air compressor or leaf blower to remove any excess water. I hope this helps.

To get even more ideas try the cleaning-detailing forum and use search to find engine compartment cleaning. You will be amazed at the different ways people choose or prefer.

I suppose it depends on how dirty the engine compartment is now. There are those here who will tell you they've hosed their engines and have no problems at all. I have a 2004 coupe and have found that if I keep it clean by wiping it down once every few weeks, I don't have to use the spray. I just take an old microfiber cloth and spray some Simple Green on it and then wipe down all the areas I can reach. Sometimes it takes a tooth brush or something small to get into some of the hard to reach areas. It also takes some patience and time. I like to do it on an afternoon when nothings pressing and I can just take my time. If you can do this every few weeks, you won't need to do the hosing. Good luck.

I know I better knock on wood, however, I have always just used a power wash on my egine area. (20 years) I do this about once a month and my engines always look new. Never had a problem

Though many modern cars electronics are water-proof, be careful with presure washers and water in general, if you can use damp rags would probably be better than blasting water all over the place.
