can anyone please tell me about using a clay bar? In all my years, I have never even seen one, let alone used one. I'm trying to get the best shine for the bucks without spending hundreds on car wax. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I bought a kit with clay bar and spray from autozone. You just spray and area and rub the clay till smooth, or till it starts draging. Fold the clay over and move on. After claying the entire body, I followed with a carnuba wax. At first I did not think my paint could get any smother, but the clay made significant difference in the feel of the paint.
1. Wash the car with Dawn dish soap to remove the previous wax.
2. Mix some good war wash with water in a spray bottle. Work the clay bar all around keeping the surface wet and slippery. The clay bar will pull all of the embedded impurities from the paint.
3. Wash again.
4. Use scratch and swirl remover if needed.
4. Wax with your choice of products. I prefer Zaino.

Advance Auto (and others) have Mother's Claybar Package, which includes the bar, a bottle of detailer spray and wax. I understand how to use it and the results it produces. Can anyone explain though how, technically, it is able to get the impurities that that a good cleaner wax, etc., doesn't, especially when you are adding a slip agent to it, i.e., detailer spray, soap spray or whatever.

I used a clay bar on mine earlier this year for the first time. Amazing how smooth the paint can feel after getting all the impurities off the surface.
Also, check out the Car Care Discussion section of the Forum. Several very knowlegeable people and a few profession detailers hang out in that section and you find lots of good info there.

Good luck and post some pics.
How do you get the Dawn dishwashing soap to remove wax? I've tried, and it just don't do it. Thanks!

The clay should glide fairly smoothly on the surpace of your paint. You DON'T want the clay to drag. Keep the surface well lubricated.
Also, keep the Dawn in your sink, or for very occasional uses on your car. It is no friend of your "rubber" seals.
If you clay your car, you will remove most of your sealant, and if you polish it you will remove it all.
How do you remove the hairline scratches or swirls. Do you use something like scratch x after clay barring the car or what.
Don't want to ruin the clearcoat finish.

After I finish with the clay, I inspect for fine scratches. If I find some, I use my Porter Cable RO buffer and some mild scratch and swirl remover on them.
I don't necessarily agree with this. The contaminants "stick" to the clay and the clay pulls them away.
It doesn't pull the contaminents from the surface like a tweaser pulling out a splinter is what I meant. Yes, contaminents will stick to the clay however.
