Default 100% cotton -or- Microfiber?

Getting ready to have a detail weekend date with my one-day old BLACK Z06. Previously used ZAINO products on my C5 and very happy w/ results. Lots of guys using microfiber towels instead of 100% cotton Cannon towels... Opinions?

I am a little freaked out because black is well... black!

Depnds on the quality of the Microfiber towel. There is some serious junk floating around out there under the disguise of Microfiber.
Your best bet is to take a CD with you, if you purchase locally, rub the towel on a the recorded side of the CD, if it scratches, move on.
I have been selling and using Microfibers for 4 years now and amazed at the "stuff" that is out there.
I like to use a combination of synthetic MF's to dry the car after a wash and polish removal/detail spray, and the DF Towels for day to day maintenance.
Although I use the DF's for polish removal and detail spray with excellent results. It just depends on which type towel is on top of the stack.
The synthetics absorb a lot more water per towel, but the DF's are softer, with a taller nap, and will pull dirt further away from the surface. DF's are excellent for polish removal where a fair amount of residue is pulled off the car. It absorbs it deep into the towel preventing it from recreating the swirls you are trying to get rid of.
So, my choice after all that babbling
Synthetics - Waffle Weave or Thick napped for drying after a wash
DF's - for polish removal, detail spray and day to day maintenance.

I have both the Meguiar's Supreme Shine Microfiber towels (http://www.meguiars.com/?car-wash-to...ine-Microfiber) and the Meguiar's Ultra Plush Super Terry towels (http://meguiars.com/?car-wash-towels...sh-Super-Terry). Both are awesome, but I like the Terry twoels a lot more.

some guys here are going to freak out , but i've been using sam's club microfiber towels for detailing. they are less than $12 for a bundle of 20 (or 25). to be honest, i can't tell the difference in the finish of my BLACK z06 if i use turtle wax or zaino, 50 cent microfiber, or 10 dollar microfiber. it all looks the same to me... BTW, and this IJMHO, but most of this stuff on microfiber and wax is 90% and 10% fact.

I use only DFTowels microfiber and also use 100% cotton and even 100% cotton baby diapers.

Thanks Stve, (GRZLDVT). I placed an order on your website. Hopefully you can get it shipped from SJ to OC in time for my "detail date".

I've been using the Sam's (and Walmart) 70/30 towels for two years now with excellent results. As long as you are carefull and keep them really clean...I don't see the harm. My paint on my show car still looks new with no scratchs or swirls.

yup - my thoughts exactly.

also note DFTowels are 100% cotton but apparently a special cotton "microfiber" . So when we talk about "cotton towels", that means bath towels or DFTowels. "Microfiber" is taken to mean synthetic - a combination of polyester and polyamide - just dead dinosaurs, no cotton.

I am as careful as I can be, using just a supersoft waffle weave microfiber towel (synthetic) to dry, then 100% cotton bath towels or 100% cotton DFTowels for Zaino, or for quick detailing. But I still get fine cobwebbing - I suppose the only way to never get a cobweb is to never touch the towel - that's why some guys blow dry their cars (seriously).

I never tried the microfiber towels...was thinking about trying one out.
Well last week a guy with a K Code Mustang (FORGIVE ME) jumped all over my A** for using a cotton Towel on my 87 . He popped his hood and out came a microfiber towel from Griots... gratis......well.....I will never use another cotton towel again. A W E S O M E !!!! One of these little buggers seemed to absorb more wax and did a far better job than any towel I have ever used. So I'm sold!!! And btw...my 87 is Black.

In almost every case a good microfiber will outperform most cotton towels. But microfibers are designed for different needs and specialize in different areas. We carry more than 10 different designs, each specializing in washing, drying, polishing, wax removal, and glass protection.

Your doing your car a disservice if you never considered at least one to try: http://www.autogeek.net/mictow.html

If your car has any dirt or grit on it and you are using a detailing spray to clean it, I would use a deep-knap 100% cotton towel.

Microfiber towels are great at removing dirt, but by design, they tend to trap the dirt close to the surface of the towel. This presents an increased risk of rubbing the trapped grit over the surface of your car.

Cotton towels by contrast trap the dirt into the deep knap thereby minimizing this problem.

On a black car, this might be helpful in avoiding any swirl marks.
