Default Windshield scratch

Posted this in C5. Probably should have put it here to start with. I have a minor scratch in the windshield from some sort of debris that got under the windshield wiper. Maybe 1/16 of an inch wide and not deep enough that you can feel it. Any recomendations, especially from folks who have actually used the various scratch removal products, are appreciated. Thanks. Bill

You could give Zaino glass polish a try but do not expect miracles. It will remove very minor stuff when used with a buffer but most scratches may need to be removed by a professional glass person. It is cheap enough that I would try Zaino or one of the other OTC glass polishes first. I will say that I was very impressed with the Zaino glass polish but I was not trying to remove any scratches but my windshield seemed clearer and my wipers worked much better.

Thanks for the reply. I'm in West Chester. Pass by your way on the way home from work sometimes. If you see and mil yellow 03 Z06 give a wave.

Would you happen to know anyone in our area that does that sort of work?l

No, but if you wanted to stop by on your way home one day or on a weekend I have some Z12 Glass Polish and a buffer, we can give it a shot and see if we can make it look any better and compare notes on our Z06's. Let me know, I will PM you my # and address if you are interested.

Actually, after thinking about it I do have a number of a company called Novus (I think) that fixes chips in windshields, they may fix scratches also, if the Z12 does not work I will get you their number.

Polishing Glass:
Once the glass surface has been washed and cleaned (detailers clay) any minor imperfections can be removed with an abrasive glass polish (Autoglym Car Class Polish or DP High Performance Glass Restorer) This thick citrus-based cream safely pulls contaminants out of the glass, including alkaline mineral deposits, and then smoothes out etched glass (http://www.autogeek.org) Be aware the some imperfections cannot be removed and you may have to replace it. If you can catch your fingernail in the scratch 0.4 Mil (0 .004 –inch deep) you should consult a professional glass repair / replacement company.

A replacement windscreen can sometimes be claimed on an insurance policy without loss of no-claim bonus, dependant upon coverage (check first with insurance company).

Some windscreen ‘glass’ is actually a plastic resin and will scratch easily, consult your dealer to find out what material was used for the OEM windshield.
