Default 3M paint protection: install report

Dad got the 3M paint protection film put on his C6 this weekend. Looks fantastic...I'd recommend this to anyone. I wish I knew about it just after I got my bmw...but now i've got a nice amount of stone chips
For anyone in the md/dc/va/lower pa area...call skip at www.pftfilms.com I don't get anything by giving him a plug, but I think he did a real nice job. Took about 3.5 hours for hood/mirrors/fenders/lights/foglights/rocker panels and approx. $1400.

i bought the film (3m brand) from a guy on ebay for about 150.00 and am going to try and do it myself. i can't pay someone (being nice) 12/14 hundred bucks. i can hang wall paper, surely i can stick plastic film on a vette.

It's a great product, but your Dad paid too much. I had the same pices installed (except the rocker panels) at my home for $750. That included everything (materials and labor).

Maybe so...but this company came highly recommended. Some companies I called were cheaper but I wanted to go with a place I was comfortable with rather than having to replace it later.

I have some pics...if you guys/girls want 'em...send me your email address and i'll send them.

mpuzach...Do you happen to have any pictures of the finished product? Is it noticable on the car, or do you have to be really close to see it?

I'm assuming the pictures you have on the site don't have the 3M installed since the car is brand new in them...

It is noticable...but just barely and if you really look for it. The car is Monterey Red and it's slightly visible. But it's better than having chips. Silver is the least obvious for the 3M

Can it be removed later if...god forbid...I decide to sell the car 10...15...20 years down the road?

Yes...it's totally removable...it's applied with water and something else...basically like window tinting for your paint except clear. It's got a coat of clearcoat on it...so you can wax it like the rest of your car.

Have you heard of any issues with it sliding out of position or falling off?

Nope...once it's installed...it's there for good unless you want to have it removed. Just had the car out today.

I'm in No Va and got it done for $700 - through a stealership.

I just took some pics...so send me email addresses or PM them.

I'm sure prices vary all over. This guy was saying average price is $1000 but for the vette it's more since the car has a lot of area to cover. As I said before, we were going by positive feedback about this guy.

Actually, I had it installed the day after I drove my car home from the dealer. It's already on in the pics you can see here. Here are a couple of others.

BTW, the only places where the lines are clearly visible are the edges of the material on the hood and front fenders. Even there, you've got to be looking for them in order to see them. I absolutely agree with the others here who've said that they'd rather live with the very subtle lines than with the otherwise inevitable stone chips. With this product, the chance of getting chips in a protected area is virtually nil.

Default Do it

I have used the film (had applied professioinally) on about 7 of my cars over the last 7 yrs. Works great, and can be removed without any visible signs it was there. I will say that it can be very challanging to install and don't recommend a do it yourself job.

For the C6 there are many optional pieces that can drastically change the price of the install. I had all possible pieces done and my price was about $1400. Sounds like a lot, but it is great piece of mind. I can't really say that I have ever gotten that money back in resale though.

I have 10,000+ on my c6 and it still looks great. It can be seen but it is difficult to see it. If you are not looking for it you will never see it.
I paid about $1000 for nose, hood, mirrors, front and rear rocker panels, door edges and a bit on the rear deck( to protect against hand scratches closing the trunk).
THE JOB TOOK OVER 4 HOURS AND WAS VERY DIFFICULT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO DO IT OFTEN... The Corvette shape was the reason. others apparently are not so tough.

Check out the applicator list at www.ultrashieldusa.com. Many of the UltraShield licensees are participating in a program with 3M to bring a greatly improved product to market. The second iteration of that product was just released. I installed it on a dark blue Mini last Friday and it is awesome...virtually invisible...it is very difficult to see the line on the back edge. This new product is only available from UltraShield until 3M produces the final version.
