Buying a US car in Canada question
So there痴 a guy up from the states I met who drove up here and I知 digging his ride. I知 curious, if i were to buy it off him here, car is plated, ins and registration is in the US, does that at all change the process in dealing with customs and duties? Anyone know? Would I still have to go through the same process and bring the car back to the border to do the paperwork and pay all the same fees etc...?

Two things happen at the border:
1. first the car is exported out of the US thru the US Customs people
2. and then you declare the car with the Canadian officials as the car is brought over which triggers the importation process
so short answer is No, you just can稚 buy a US car that happens to be temporarily located in Canada

and make sure the car is admissible into Canada. I imported a car a few years ago into Canada everything at the border went well then had the inspection and it went well got it insured and registered and low and behold a few weeks later a letter in the mail telling me I had to export the car back to the states. something to do with the seat belts.

Ive purchased 2 cars in the US. Just because the car is physically already here does not entitle you to any shortcuts in administration to get you a Canadian ownership. But no worries - the procedure is quite simple if you follow the RIV guidelines linked above.
