Default Well, in the shop again......

Venting, sorry.

Fun times.

I think there is raw fuel in the oil. Oil changed 1000km ago, it's black as night time. Smells of gas, very strong.

Q-jet appears to be cracked somewhere. Fuel pooling on the intake manifold, running down the engine. Maybe leaking through the valve cover gasket? No idea.

Fuel mileage is worsening, last tank, 280km on 50L of fuel.

Tear down tonight or tomorrow. Just in time for the long weekend

Well, off to get my hands dirty.

Did you buy the QF that you were looking into a few weeks ago? Hopefully your rings, bearings etc are ok as if that much gas is in your oil you would have washed the cylinders down. Did you rebuild that Q-Jet recently? Hoping for the best Mike.

No QF.....yet.

Q-jet was massaged over the past winter.

I see you were looking at a single plane, I have a Torker that i just took off my old engine that you can have. I also have a new Team G but will be selling that one as I am sticking with the GM single plane that came with the new engine. The Torker is a decent low rise single plane, not as good as either the Victor Jr or Team G but add a 1/2" spacer and you'll have some fun.

Good luck on the repair job Mike, I hope it's not too serious. Another day in the life of a C3 owner.

Troubleshooting suggestions from a car guy

You might have a couple of things going on :

Gas in oil - could be a perforated diaphragm in the fuel pump (you do use high test right ? to get away from ethanol ?)

Leaking carb shouldn't be to hard to determine origin : have never seen a cracked Q-jet fuel body, could be corroded welch plug at front of fuel line inlet or bad needle and seat causing high fuel level (ethanol fuels) and float bowl overflowing.

Also bad (heavy) float could cause high fuel level

Wipe it all down, blow off with air (if you have it) start it up and LQQK use mirror etc.

Internally there are a couple of well plugs that could be leaking into the manifold and if bad enough past the rings into the motor.
But it would be running terrible then.

Really doubt fuel would get in through valve cover gasket.

Where is it pooling on the manifold ?

I just ordered some needle & seat assy's to replace mine and do quick carb service - my mileage is down a bit too.

280 km on 50l = 15.8 mpg - Not great, but not terrible (depends what you were getting before ?)

Massaging ?? - any chance re-assembled improperly ? clip on needle & seat in wrong location, incorrect float level or damaged the float ?

How about missing or cracked fuel inlet nut gasket ??

Good advice, any updates Mike????????

As an aside, once Mike has this problem figured out, what would you guys think about a Georgian Bay cruise for either the second or third weekend in September?

No sooner had the wrench on the carb bolts then got a phone call. (Did get the oil changed out though)
FIL out of the hospital. Which is usually a good thing, but not in this case.

Hospital called. "We're discharging him monday at 9am. Come and get him."

He's deemed palliative. Has "a few days to a few weeks" so were told.
So he's home but requires 24 hr assistance until a bed in a hospice becomes available. MIL and my wife and I are taking turns.

And to add to the positive thoughts, my brother, released under palliative care just after the New Year, has been out and about, been driving my Z and is now going to the CTMP Truck race with me later this month

Lets hope the same for you Mike, doctors do get stuff wrong sometimes...

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

He's still with us. Had him out for a drive today. Bit to hot. Though he was a goner this afternoon.
