Default *** 3 C3's in the yard at Standard Auto Wreckers***

There was a thread last week about this in the C3 gen section, I had to see for myself because it is very unusual for a Corvette to end up in a regular wrecking yard.

I went there today, it was their "all you can carry out for $50" day.....found the 3 vettes....silver 74 & 77 and a black 74.

Got a bunch of parts...still a lot there, including diffs, crossmembers, doors, door glass, control arms, trailing arms, brake calipers, engines, transmissions, accessory brackets and pulleys, steering boxes, gas tanks, rear windows, seats, interior trim, hoods, ect, ect. Tons of small parts as well.

The birdcage and frame on the silver 74 are in good shape. The black 74 has a mint rad support cradle.

Took some pics, in no particular order:

I've never been, you have to bring your own tools to remove the stuff?

Yes, you bring your own tools to remove whatever parts you want. Every Saturday is their " all you can carry out for $50 " day. Get there early, and bring as little tools as necessary, it is a very large yard to walk. They remove the wheels on all the cars; the bottom cars are on their belly on the ground, and the top cars are just stacked on the bottom cars. If you want something from a top car, you will have to climb up into it. When I left I could barely walk because I was so weighed down with tools and parts!

Holly Crap,

I've been to those all you can pull and I only wish I new earlier about this. My loss as it's too late now, since I can't get away now. Seems like once in a lifetime opportunity.

Thanks for sharing Bruce.

It's hard to believe at one time loved cars could end up like that.

You must be planning on a short life

Pretty wild but still doesn't top the Rolls Royce I saw in the U-PULL in Orlando couple of years ago LOL

If I do my math correct, it's happened once that I know of in around 50 years, If I happen to find out about it in another 50 years I won't be here to take advantage of it so yes, once in my life time. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm saying it's a first I've heard of it in my life time, which is 3 Vettes in a "all you can pull" yard close to us.

To me that huge difference is the "all you can pull".

Would that '74 Rad. surround work with a '73?

Well you could be like some of the fulks I see show up at the yards in Fla and Ca with just a pair of pliers

When they ask to borrow my tools to which I give them a ration of **** and then not to be totally ignorant ask them for a hefty deposit to make sure they remember to find me and return my tool(s)

Don't worry Frank it's gonna keep happening ; guys like you are going to start croaking and those basket cases gotta go somewhere LOL

Almost every boneyard has a derelict Vette somewhere.
But yes you are right : 3 Vettes in the same U-Pull is pretty unusual

We don't have Vette boneyards the way they do in the 'states so there is no natural congregating home for them

Not always loved - often bought to stroke an ego and then discarded when the ego needed more....

Yep just like so many of the new Corvette's I see - to the people buying them they are just an expensive bauble or new appliance - just something to show that they have $.

Like a friend of mine says : there are Corvette owners and there are car "guys" - they're not always the same thing.

Frank,

I haven't gone back to read the "I must be a car guy because I bought one" hilarity

Anyway got thinking back about these C3's - your dream car looks pretty scabby under the hood - anything that could rust has.

I don't know how you intend to address all the rusty brackets and stuff.
There is no way to rejuvenate rusted metal unless you intend to just spot putty and paint over everything.

I would make a shopping list and maybe take the rusted brackets and stuff with you and go check out these cars.
You might luck into the odd part in better shape than yours.

If you had a Vette parts book it would be a great resource to verify interchange / useage between the years.
I have had one since I got my car - it's my bible.
Parts books usually "go" for anywhere from $50 to $100.

You might not be able to hang in for another 50 years LOL

In conclusion to the 3 Vettes at the "All You Can Pull", a fellow member went last week and found that all three Vette's were pretty well picked over and there wasn't enough left for an all you can pull so a partial refund was given. Seems many people took advantage of this opportunity.

As for "your dream car looks pretty scabby under the hood - anything that could rust has".

Below is what the engine compartment looks like at the moment and I'll take your advice and repair/replace all the rusted parts. Due to personal reasons that presented themselves earlier in the year and the present kitchen reno, the "Corvette Resto" is on hold till the kitchen is complete.

Albeit, I will not be able to hang in for another 50 years, I hope the Vette will.

You've got it nicely stripped and cleaned up but what do you about the rusty metal, brackets etc.
To much work (for me) !

Yeah seems to be a re-surgence in the popularity of these long overlooked and dismissed C3's.

They do look unique these days.

Nice harmless car : nothing you're going to easily lose your license with and pretty low tech as far as maintenance and expense.

Those U-pull cars would have been good candidates for cheap rear end parts- posi's , housings, possible good ratio's etc etc
