Luggage rack
Hey guys!!
I am looking to have my luggage rack on my 77 re-done and was wondering if any of you knew of a place that would help me out?
I Did check with a couple of places but they were into larger jobs, and the one place that did give me a quote was around $500
any help would be great...look forward meeting some of you on Saturday!

Yeah, re-chroming is expensive. What about a shiney silver powdercoat if such a thing exists? What's a "new" repro worth? Did you lookin in the c3 for sale section?
Sorry I'm no help.

IF the thing is rusty why fawk around sanding and coating - lot of work for nothing (if it's rusty) - will either come through again or won't be really smooth ?
Anyway we don't know what he is thinking or dealing with ??

Noooo John - NOBODY (chrome shop) is going to waste their time with something like this.
You can't resurrect rusty old metal (easily).
For the aggravation involved a chrome shop would have to have absolutely nothing (better $$) to do (ain't gonna happen) to try and rechrome your rack.
That is why you got the $500 quote.

Unless you're really concerned about NCRS standards, you're better off getting reproduction.
I was totally shocked once when I was a Corvettes at Carlisle and bought a repoduction ash tray as the coins I would store in them caused it to rust. After purchase, I saw a used original one that was in worse shape than mine for a higher price then I bought the repo one for. Go figure!

You're welcome John
Just make sure when you buy a new rack that you get one with the same number of stanchions (mounts/uprights) as your existing one.
I believe there might have been two different but very similar luggage racks (depending on car year installed).
Your rack may or may not have been original to your car - so verify # of mounts with the replacement rack.

As Quik59 says get a repro either chrome or aluminum and be done with it.

I was thinking that to myself after I posted it & I remember reading a quite heated discussion regarding luggage racks on C3's
Thanks for being gentle!!!
John
Ps ...I love my luggage rack

Oil filters - I have so many friggin canister oil filters I picked up years ago. that at one a year I won't use them up in my life time (all kinds of of Mickey Mouse brands no one ever heard of - I'll worry about what ones are best in my next life).
Now the A212CW air filters I am interested in hearing about.
As I told you over coffee - just found out how crummy the K&N's are at actual filtering so will only use them at the drags from now on.
Seemed like AC Delco filters were quite good so bought some of those although I was thinking about the AEM filters but couldn't find any comparison's with the AC Delco's.
Carbs - well I run a Q'jet because of drag class rules and am quite happy with my tuning of it.
Once I get my oils tested and see how the car runs on the "Have Carb Tour" - hope it doesn't smoke , leak etc etc - then I'll let the "masses" in on it and see how many people I can get wound up with my choice LOL
Speaking of winding up - I better get in on the "How long have you had your Corvette survey" LOL

Rubber tips 1977 luggage rack
I am having my C3 painted and I am having the luggage rack chromed. What is the best way to remove the rubber tips on the luggage rack so they don't get damaged.
